Currey’s grandfather Jack founded a whitewater guide service on the San Juan River in southern Utah in the late 1950s. He used balsa wood rafts to transport people down the river. When he found rubber tubes left over from the Army after WWII, he sewed them to a lightweight aluminum frame and created the “J-rig,” which stands for “Jack.” Rafts are still commonly used on large rivers, such as when people travel down the Colorado River to see the Grand Canyon.

Currey’s father, Steve, took over the family guide business in Idaho. He guided people down well-known rivers such as the Selway and the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Steve Currey quickly began working in international waters. He developed a reputation as an international first-descent specialist, leading rafts of clients down rivers all over the world. He was the first person to travel down the upper Yangtze River in China, the Brahmaputra and Upper Ganges rivers in India, the Futaleufu River in Chile, the Sutlej River in India, the Figueroa River in Chile, and the Tsangpo River in Tibet, all of which were featured in National Geographic.
“My dad was the first person to run these rivers and see them from the river’s point of view,” Currey explained. “There is always a little bit of chaos on these first descents.” You have no idea what is going to happen. You never know which direction a rapid will push the boat.”
