He honed his skills at Safford High School, where his talent shone brightly.
Gaethje became a four-time finalist and a two-time state champion (AIA). To this day, he holds the seventh-most near falls (218) and the ninth-most team points scored (1057.5) in Arizona state wrestling history.
Apart from wrestling, Gaethje also dabbled in football and baseball during his high school years.
Collegiate
Graduating from Safford High School with an impressive 191–9 record, Gaethje was sought after by various colleges. Despite initially considering a small college in Arizona to stay close to his family, he eventually accepted an offer from the NCAA Division I program at the University of Northern Colorado. Gaethje’s collegiate wrestling career saw him achieve significant milestones.
As a freshman, he boasted an 18–9 record, including a third-place finish at the Oregon Wrestling Classic. His sophomore season was equally remarkable, as he qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division I 157 lb Championship. Gaethje finished the season with a 14–4 record and earned a spot on the Western Wrestling All-Conference First Team.
