Viking Wolf (Netflix): Is Gudbrand The Grim A Real Person? Plot And Ending Explained

The Norwegian filmmaker Stig Svendsen directed the horror film Viking Wolf, which will release on Netflix in the year 2023.

The movie received some attention from viewers because to the fact that it is based on the mythology of Nurse, in a manner that is comparable to what the movie Troll did a few months earlier.

There are werewolves and Vikings in the story, and the beginning of the movie tells the narrative of a Viking named Gudbrand the Grim who traveled to Normandy during the Middle Ages and brought a werewolf back to Norway with him.

Is there any truth to the rumors that surround this legend? Let’s find out.

Viking Wolf (Netflix): Is Gudbrand The Grim A Real Person?

The majority of the events in ‘Viking Wolf’ take place in the present day and follow the story of Liv and Thale Berg, a mother-daughter team who are forced to deal with the abrupt appearance of a mystery beast in their sleepy little Norwegian village.

Nevertheless, the first few minutes of the movie take place in the year 1050 and introduce the audience to Gudbrand the Grim.

In the film, Gudbrand the Grim was a Viking general who led an expedition to Normandy in Northern France. The setting for this adventure was the 11th century. In order to pillage Normandy, he commanded a fleet of twenty ships.

During the course of their plundering of the city, Gudbrand and his gang discovered a concealed door in a dimly lit abbey.

They entered through the door, which led them to the discovery of a chest that did not contain any gold or silver. Gudbrand and his soldiers came across a creature that resembled a dog, and they decided to bring it back with them to their homeland.

On the other hand, the beast is actually a hellhound, and Gudbrand is to blame for letting the monster loose in Norway. After destroying Gudbrand’s fleet, the monster fled into the Norwegian forest, where it became entangled in the country’s folklore.

Therefore, the voyage that Gudbrand took to Normandy is directly responsible for the conception of the werewolf tale in Norwegian folklore.

Viking Wolf: Is It Based On True Event?

The narrative of the Viking leader Gudbrand the Grim (“Gudbrand den Grimme” in Norwegian), who arrived in Normandy in 1050 with his 20 ships and discovered a dog in a hidden room within an abbey, is told at the beginning of the movie Viking Wolf.

They took the dog with them when they went back to Norway, but according to the mythology, the dog was responsible for the deaths of all of the Vikings on those ships.

It then allegedly hid in the forests of Norway, where it began a bloodline of werewolves.

In spite of the fact that the story is told in a manner that makes it appear as though it is based on actual historical events, the fact of the matter is that no mention of a Viking by the name of Gudbrand the Grim or Gudbrand den Grimme can be found in any published works.

There is a Norwegian folk legend about a man named Gudbrand who lived on a hillside, but the legend has nothing to do with the Vikings raiding Normandy. Gudbrand is a traditional Norwegian name, and the legend also features a man named Gudbrand.

We would have to assume that the legend of Gudbrand the Grim, who is said to have brought the werewolf from Normandy, is not based on a true story, nor was it inspired by a well-known myth or legend, at least not until the director Stig Svendsen eventually reveals some Nurse mythology that is unknown to the majority of the world. Until then, we will have to wait.

Viking Wolf: Ending Explained

  • Thale received a bite from a werewolf on the same night as Elin was attacked. She began to get these strange images, but she had no idea what they signified at the time.
  • In addition, the wound on her shoulder had not been healing, and she had been experiencing bouts of nausea and sickness as a result. Nobody knew that Thale was secretly undergoing a transformation into a werewolf while he went about his daily life.
  • When Thale’s hunger for blood got the best of her, she devoured Jonas and couldn’t stop herself. Jonas was with Thale at the time.
  • After Thale went into hiding, the police discovered the body of Jonas, who had already passed away. After examining the werewolf’s wounds, William came to the conclusion that this particular werewolf was not as large as the one they had previously slain.
  • When the reports arrived, it was determined that the predator had a great deal of similarities with human DNA, and William was aware that an infected person had converted into a werewolf.
  • While this was going on, Thale, who had previously gone into hiding, boarded a bus, but sometime in the middle of her trip, she underwent a complete transformation into a werewolf.

  • She began murdering the people who were riding the bus, and at that point, Liv was made aware of the situation; hence, she made her way straight to the Nybo tunnel.
  • When Liv looked closer, she saw that it was actually her own daughter who had undergone the transformation into a werewolf.
  • It was a terrible situation for a mother to be in since, on the one hand, there were people for whom she was responsible, and on the other side, there was her daughter, who had turned into a carnivorous predator.
  • Thale, who had absolutely no control over himself, went to her home even though she was not there. Jenny stared the wolf in the face when she first encountered it, and she had the sudden realization that she was looking at her own sister.
  • Because Jenny was there, Thale was able to relax, and it appeared as though she would be able to control her instincts without causing her any harm.
  • However, precisely at that moment, Arthur came, and upon witnessing Jenny in danger from a dangerous animal, he immediately began attacking the animal with whatever he could find.
  • Arthur and Jenny were able to get away from the house, but on their way, Arthur was involved in a car accident and as a result, he passed out due to the fact that he had been bleeding heavily.

  • Jenny was once again confronted by her sister, and this time it seemed as though she would be able to exert some measure of authority over her.
  • On the other hand, Liv and William arrived to the site and shot the werewolf with a tranquilizer gun this time. It had no effect on the speed of the predator, and Thale continued to pursue them with all of his strength.
  • Lars Brodin attempted to kill the werewolf by driving his caravan at full speed into it in the hopes that it would be injured; but, his efforts were in vain, and he was also taken out by it.
  • Jenny was the one who, in the end, successfully subdued the wolf by stabbing it with a tranquilizer and making it stop moving. It was a challenging task for her to complete given that she was aware that the person in question was her own sister; yet, she was out of choices at that point.
  • Thale was taken to the forensics lab, and Liv realized that in order to stop her from attacking anybody else, she had to be killed. She loaded her gun with the silver bullets that Lars had given her, and it seems likely that she was the one who actually shot and killed her daughter.
  • After Liv returned, she placed the portrait of her daughter in front of the silver bullet as a memorial to the times they had spent together. The conclusion of “Viking Wolf” is bittersweet, but it is not out of the question that we may see another sick person wreaking havoc in Nybo in the following episode (assuming there will be one).

Does Thale Fully Transforms Into A Werewolf?

While Liv concentrates on finding a solution to the mystery, Thale’s situation continues to deteriorate.

She spends time with Jonas despite the fact that she frequently experiences horrific visions and is sick the majority of the time.

Even at school, she suffers a breakdown and then bolts out of there. Thale notices the moon one night as he is hanging out with Jonas, and this triggers the beginning of his transformation.

The following morning, she finds herself in her garage, but this time she is human and her teeth are sharp.

Thale makes the decision to leave town after coming to the conclusion that she was the one who attacked and killed Jonas. At this point, her features have begun to take on an animalistic appearance.

She travels to the police station to get a better look at her mother from a distance before boarding a bus bound for Oslo.

William reveals to Liv that the wolf that murdered Jonas was a much smaller animal somewhere else. He eventually obtains the results of a DNA test performed on the previously murdered beast and discovers that the DNA of the animal is identical to that of a human being.
