Career

Due to his dismal college record with the Northwestern Wildcats, Trevor Siemian’s selection in the 2015 NFL Draft was met with minimal enthusiasm. Even after being ranked 22nd best, the individual himself did not think he had a chance to play in the NFL.

He had prepared himself for a job or, more likely, a career in real estate before the Denver Broncos took him as the last quarterback remaining with the 250th pick in the draught.

Despite making only one appearance during the 2015 season — against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 20, 2015 — Siemian played a role in the Broncos’ 24-10 Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers, albeit from the bench.

Siemian saw increased playing time in 2016 after the Broncos’ first-choice quarterback, Peyton Manning, retired and his backup, Josh McCown, chose to join the Houston Texans.

He was chosen ahead of veteran Mark Sanchez and a rookie as the starting quarterback for the 2016 season.

He started the season opener against the Carolina Panthers, a rematch of Super Bowl 50, becoming the first Northwestern University quarterback to do so since Otto Graham in 1955.

Trevor Siemian also made history by becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to start a season opener for a Super Bowl champion who had never thrown an NFL pass. Prior to the game against the Panthers, he had only played one game for the Broncos and had not thrown a pass.

Between Weeks 8 and 14, he was joined by Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots as the only quarterbacks to average more than 300 passing yards per game.

Siemian recorded his best-ever rating of 125.6 against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 12, and towards the end of the season, the figures showed that he had outperformed his predecessors, Manning and Osweiler, who had set the 2015 record.
Trevor was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in March 2018 as a backup quarterback for Kirk Cousins, who had also joined the Vikings in 2018.

Timeline

2019

On March 20, 2019, Siemian agreed to terms with the New York Jets on a one-year, $2 million contract. On September 12, 2019, quarterback Sam Darnold was ruled out indefinitely with mononucleosis, and Siemian was designated the starter for Monday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.

Siemian was injured on a late hit by Myles Garrett and left the game after completing three of six throws for three yards. He was replaced by third-string quarterback Luke Falk. The following day, it was discovered that he had damaged ligaments in his ankle, effectively terminating his season.

2018

On March 19, 2018, Siemian was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round draught pick and a 2018 seventh-round draught pick. In 2018, he saw no playing time as a backup to Kirk Cousins.

2017

Siemian was chosen an alternate for the 2017 Pro Bowl on January 23, 2017, but declined the invitation due to rehabilitation from left shoulder surgery two weeks previously.

Siemian got a new head coach in Vance Joseph entering the 2017 season. On Monday Night Football, Siemian and the Denver Broncos faced the Los Angeles Chargers. Siemian completed 17-of-28 throws for 219 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and his first rushing touchdown of the season. The Broncos established a 24-7 lead, but two costly turnovers allowed the Chargers to tie the game at 24-21, but Broncos defensive end Shelby Harris stopped Younghoe Koo’s game-tying field goal, giving the Broncos the victory.

The Broncos hosted the Dallas Cowboys the following week, led by 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year Dak Prescott and leading rusher Ezekiel Elliott. As the Broncos blew out the Cowboys 42-17, Siemian went 22-of-32 for 231 yards, a career-high tying four touchdowns, and one interception.

2016

With Peyton Manning’s retirement and Brock Osweiler’s signing with the Houston Texans in 2016, Siemian, veteran Mark Sanchez, and rookie Paxton Lynch competed for the Broncos starting quarterback job. Siemian was named the starting quarterback for the 2016 season by Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak on August 29.

In his first NFL start and 21-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 regular season opener and Super Bowl 50 rematch, Siemian completed 18-of-26 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to start the defending Super Bowl champion’s season opener without having thrown an NFL pass.

He was the first Northwestern quarterback to start an NFL game since Randy Dean in 1979. The next week, in a 34-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Siemian threw for 266 yards, 215 of which came in the first half.

2015

NFLDraftScout.com ranked Siemian as the 22nd best quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft. Siemian planned a career in commercial real estate in Chicago after learning he wouldn’t be drafted. However, he was selected by the Denver Broncos with the 250th overall choice in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was selected as the seventh and last quarterback in the draught.

On December 20, 2015, Siemian made his NFL debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers, taking a knee to end the first half. Siemian was a member of the Denver Broncos team that defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 by a score of 24-10. He did not participate in the game.

2014

Siemian started the first 11 games of the 2014 season before suffering a season-ending knee injury (torn anterior cruciate ligament) versus Purdue on November 22. In a 43-40 overtime win over Notre Dame, he passed for a season-high 284 yards and ran for a career-high 32 yards. He set a career high in completions against both Michigan and Minnesota (32). He had a career-high three touchdowns against Penn State. He threw a 54-yard touchdown throw and caught a 17-yard touchdown pass against California. The Wildcats finished with another 5-7 record and lost out on a bowl game. He rushed for five touchdowns and passed for 2,214 yards on the season. The latter places him barely outside the top ten all-time in Northwestern single-season history.

2013

Siemian studied in Communication Studies at Northwestern University and was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2013 and 2014. During his freshman year of college in 2010, he redshirted.

Siemian appeared in all 12 games and made his second and third career starts in 2013, while playing behind “wildcat” quarterback Kaepernick. He passed for 414 yards against Illinois, the 10th most ever by a Northwestern quarterback. He threw 46 times against Minnesota, completing 25 of them.

He had a career-long 67-yard pass against Ohio State. He threw a career-high three touchdown touchdowns against Syracuse. He carried for a career-high 21 yards against California. The Wildcats ended 5-7 and did not qualify for a bowl game. He threw for 2,149 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season.

2012

During the 2012 season, Siemian received the majority of the quarterback reps, with Kaepernick seeing limited action. After trailing by six points with 2:40 remaining in the season opener against Syracuse, Siemian led the team on a 75-yard game-winning drive.

He led back-to-back go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt, including a vital 34-yard connection on a third-and-15 play. In his first career start versus Indiana, he threw for 308 yards on 22-of-32 passing in a 44-29 victory. He helped Northwestern defeat Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl, where he led two touchdown drives and scored his first career rushing touchdown.

2011

Siemian was a backup quarterback to starter Dan Persa in 2011. He appeared in eight games, the first of which was against Eastern Illinois. For the season, he completed 16 of 26 throws for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
