Career

Granato was picked by the New York Rangers in the sixth round (120th overall) of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft after playing collegiate hockey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He has previously played for the New York Rangers, the Los Angeles Kings, and the San Jose Sharks. Granato was suspended by the NHL for 15 games in February 1994 after slashing Chicago’s Neil Wilkinson in the head during a game in Los Angeles. This was the seventh-longest suspension in NHL history as of 2005. Granato got the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy while playing with the Sharks in 1997.

Prior to the 2002-03 season, Granato joined the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach. Following a disappointing start to the season, the Avalanche sacked head coach Bob Hartley on December 18, 2002, and Granato was appointed to permanent head coach. Despite a rocky start under Hartley, the Avalanche finished 32-11-8 under Granato and qualified for the playoffs.

However, they were defeated in seven games by the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the 2003 playoffs. Granato guided Colorado to a 40-22-20 record in his first full season behind the bench. After defeating the Dallas Stars in five games, the Avalanche fell to the San Jose Sharks in six.

Tony was replaced by Joel Quenneville following the heartbreaking playoff loss to the Sharks. Granato opted to stay on as an assistant after being reassigned. He was in that job for three years. Granato was named head coach of the Avalanche again on May 22, 2008, following the departure of Quenneville for the 2008-09 season.

Granato was sacked on June 3, 2009, after guiding the poorest season in Avs history, with a record of 32-45-5.
