Coach Joe Paterno coached Blackledge for three years at Penn State, where he led the Nittany Lions to a 31-5 record and a national championship in 1982.

Following the 1982 season, Blackledge received the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback. Blackledge threw for 2218 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions as a senior, while also rushing for three touchdowns.

In the 1983 Sugar Bowl, Blackledge led the Nittany Lions to the National Championship with a 27-23 victory over Georgia and Herschel Walker. Blackledge was the game’s MVP, throwing for 228 yards and a 47-yard touchdown pass to Gregg Garrity in the fourth quarter.

Professional Life

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Blackledge seventh overall in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He was chosen second to John Elway (#1, Baltimore) but first to Dan Marino (#27, Miami), surprising both Marino (who thought he was better than Blackledge) and Blackledge himself (who had expected to be picked in the middle of the round).

He was also chosen ahead of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly (14th overall, Buffalo), Tony Eason (15th, New England), and Ken O’Brien (22nd, New York Jets).

Blackledge played for the Chiefs for five seasons (1983-1987) before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers (1988–1989). In Kansas City, he mostly served as a backup to Pro Bowl quarterback Bill Kenney.

In Pittsburgh, Blackledge was the backup to Bubby Brister for the final two seasons, going 2-3 in games started due to Brister’s injury.
