Satellite Tracking System in Himachal Pradesh to Check Forest Fires

  •  A satellite tracking system has been set-up to check forest fires during summers in Himachal Pradesh. It is announced by State Forest Minister Thakur Singh Bharmauri on May 27, 2015 to save precious forest wealth.
  •  In this regard, awareness campaign was being launched throughout the State for protection of forest wealth from fire for which 693 participatory committees had been constituted and 86 water tanks had been constructed to extinguish the fire.
  • Under the satellite tracking system, continuous vigil was being kept on the forests to ensure that the fire fighting staff reached the spot immediately on receiving information.

Tripura Government has Withdrawn AFSPA

  • The Tripura government took decision to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) on May 27 2015 ,The Act has been in force in the State since February’, 1997. The decision is taken after the State government had reviewed security matters.
  • The AFSPA had been in force in the State’s 26 police station areas. In four police station limits, the Act was partially enforced. In November, 2014, the Act, which confers sweeping powers on the armed forces, was extended for six months in the State.
  • The State government now will move to the Union Home Ministry for formal withdrawal of the Central Act from State which was in effect for the last 18 years to curb insurgency.

Delhi Government Approved Mandatory GPS in Public Transport

  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has approved mandatory Global Positioning System (GPS) on all public transport vehicles on May 25, 2015.
  • The decision was taken keeping in view the security and safety of commuters, especially women. The GPS devices, will be supplied by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS). The DIMTS will monitor all data from the GPS devices.
  • The transport department had made it mandatory for all auto rickshaws in 2014 to install GPS in order to get their annual fitness certificate. It had later expanded that ambit tp cover taxis and gramin sewa.

Gujarat Government Initiated Sloth Habitat Project

  • Gujarat government has taken-up a project to provide better habitat to sloth bears by restoring the ecology of Jessore Wildlife Sanctuary on May 24, 2015. In this regard, more trees will be planted and unwanted vegetation will be removed.
  • A pilot project has been taken up for sloth bears in Banaskantha district by State Forest Department in coordination with the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC). Positive results found there inspired the government to take the new initiative.

2015-16 to be Observed as ‘Year of Development for Punjab’

  • Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal, said on May 31, 2015 that the year 2015-16 will be observed as the ‘Year of Development’ as a part of Punjab government’s efforts to give further fillip to the ‘all round development of the State’.
  • Focus of the State government will be on providing ultra modern civic amenities to the people in urban and rural areas during this phase.
  • In urban areas, focus will be on providing the facility of water supply, sewerage, Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs), streetlights, roads and parks whereas in rural areas provision of roads, potable drinking water, disposal of waste water and toilets will be the thrust areas.

Maharashtra Government Launched ‘Swachhata Saptapadi’ Scheme

  • The Maharashtra government launched ‘Swachhata Saptapadi’ scheme at Mumbai on May 29, 2015, on the lines of Central government’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.
  • The successful implementation of the scheme depends upon the linking of the grants received by the -< municipal councils and corporations from the 14th Finance Commission.
  • Providing proper facilities to defecate to about eight lakh homes in urban areas of the state that do not have toilets is the first mission of ‘Swachhata Saptapadi’.
  • The term Saptapadi means vows taken during marriage by bride and groom in Maharashtra. Under this scheme, State government will introduce the concept of a pledge to create awareness and seriousness about the Swachh Maharashtra Abhiyan.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar Coronated as Mysuru’s New ‘Maharaja’

  • Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new ‘Maharaja’ and nominal head of the 600-year-old Wadiyar dynasty at the Amba Vilas Palace in Mysuru on May 28, 2015, 41 years after late Srikantadatta Narsimharaja Wadiyar was crowned.
  • After his coronation, he was rechristened with full title name of Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. Fie also became the custodian of more than 1500 acres of land and palaces of Wadiyar dynasty in Karnataka.
  • Yaduveer is the grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysuru, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.
  • He recently finished his graduation in Economics from the University of Massachusetts (USA) and was adopted by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar whose husband and the last scion, Srikantadatta Wadiyar passed away in December, 2013.

Maharashtra Cabinet gave Nod to Night Shifts for Women Workers

  • The government of Maharashtra on May 20, 2015 decided to make several amendments to the Factories Act, 1948, clearing the decks for women employees to work in night shifts. Currently, under the Section-66( 1) (c) of Factories Act, women are not permitted to work between 7 pm to 6 am.
  • The companies making women employees work night shifts will have to provide for their security as per the guidelines of the Union government, and States such as Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh have already permitted women to work in night shifts.

Meghalaya Achieved 100% Inclusion in Jan Dhan Yojana

  • All households in the State Meghalaya have been successfully covered under the scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna i.e., more than 5.53 lakh households have been covered with 1.55 lakh new bank accounts. So, the State has achieved 100% success-in implementing the scheme.
  • Rural population has given more response to the financial inclusion scheme by opening new bank accounts in comparison to the urban population. Because in urban area the figure is over 47000, whereas over 1.8 lakh accounts have been opened in rural areas.

Maharashtra Government Banned Digging of Borewells Deeper than 200 Feet

  • The Maharashtra government has decided to ban digging of borewells beyond 200 feet on May 13, 2015 as part of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ ambitious water conservation project Jalayukta Shivar Yojana.
  • The yojana is framed in order to check the steep decline in ground water level across the state and promises to make 5000 villages in the State drought-free in one year.
  • The violators for the first time will face a fine of ? 10000 in addition to the suspension of the vehicle’s licence. If the violation is repeated, he will face imprisonment of six months or a fine of ? 25000 or both.
  • The condition in the Marathwada region and Buldhana and Amravati districts is especially bad, where borewells have been dug almost 1000 feet below ground, but no water was found.

Punjab Government became First to Issue Soil Health Cards to Farmers

  • In view the overexploitation of soil during the past 20 years, the agricultural department of Punjab launched a programme which monitors the soil health of every farm in the State on May 13, 2015.
  • In this regard, every district had been given a mobile laboratory to collect soil samples from every farm and issue farmers Soil Health Card (SHCS) linked with the department’s central server.
  • Presently, Punjab government has 66 such laboratories and has capability to test 3.5 lakh soil samples annually. Punjab government also has made mandatory for these labs to check soil health on quarterly basis.

NGT Bills Delhi Households for a Cleaner Yamuna

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) announced on May 8, 2015 that, every household in Delhi will have to pay environmental compensation every month, for a cleaner river Yamuna.
  • The payment of the ‘environmental compensation’ would be added to electricity bills, water bill and the property tax demand in order of preference by the respective departments which will transfer the money to NCT, Delhi.
  • The compensation to be paid would be directly proportional to the property or water tax, whichever is higher, paid by a particular household. In case of households in unauthorised colonies which do not pay property tax or water bill, the amount would be Rs. 100 to Rs. 500.

Nadia Bagged UN Public Service Award

  • Nadia district of West Bengal was declared as the first ‘Open Defecation Free’ district in India. The district has won the United Nations Public Service Award 2015 in the category of improving delivery of public services.
  •  The award will be handed over by United Nations Secretary-General on June 23, 2015 in Medellin (Republic of Colombia) in the category of ‘Improving the Delivery of Public Services’ for the initiative ‘Sabar Shouchagar’.
  • While 187 countries Were in running for the award, Hooghly and Burdwan districts of West Bengal have bagged the second and third positions and Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan also features in the top 10 list of open defecation free districts.

Maharashtra Lowered Calamity-hit Crop Loss Percentage to 33%

  •  The Maharashtra government decided to bring down the crop loss percentage i.e., compensation to farmers whose crop is hit by natural calamities to 33% from existing 50% on May 5, 2015.
  •  As per the existing rules, farmers are entitled for government aid only if 50% (and above that) of their crop is damaged, whereas villages with crop yield of less than 50 paise get benefit of the scarcity-affected areas.
  •  As per the new directive, farmers who toil crop on non- irrigated land will get compensation of ? 6800 up to two hectares from existing ? 4500 in case of damage due to natural calamities.

NTPC Signed Pact with Jharkhand for Patratu Power Station

  •  National Power Thermal Corporation (NTPC) signed a pact with Jharkhand government on-May 3,2015 for setting-up a 4000 MW power plant in the State. In this regard, the NTPC would establish a Joint Venture (JV) with Jharkhand Bidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited for the project.
  • The pact is also signed for reviving the Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS) in Jharkhand. It will help in build an efficient super critical project of 4000 MW in two phases, provide cheap and affordable 24×7 power supply to every household and adequate power for farmers in Jharkhand.
