Kenya’s Kotut and Depkesho Won Paris Marathon
- Kenyan Cyprien Kotut won the 40th Paris Marathon, on April 3, 2016 in Paris in personal best of 2 hr, 7 min and 13 sec. He was fresh from Paris Half Mi athon in March, 2016.
- Kotut became the 12th Kenyan to win the race and put his case straight ahead of the national marathon team selection for Rio Olympic Games. He made his marathon debut in Mil^n in 2015 and finished second in 2:08:55.
- Visiline Jepkesho won the women’s title. She atoned for her last year’s third place finish to win this year’s Paris Marathon in 2 hr 25 min and 57 sec ahead of Ethiopian pair Gulume Chala (2nd position) and Dinknesh Tefera (3rd position).
2016 Hockey India Annual Awards
- PR Sreejesh and Deepika conferred with the Player of the Year honours at the 2nd Hockey India Annual Awards ceremony for 2015 at Bengaluru on March 26, 2016. Both Sreejesh and Deepika were given a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.
- PR Sreejesh played a starring role in India’s shoot-out victory over Holland in the bronze-medal match at the HWL Final. Sreejesh, also picked up the Fan’s Choice Award. Deepika was recognised for her work in defence as the Indian women’s team qualified for the Olympic Games after a gap of 36 years.
- The Late Capt. Shankar Laxman was posthumously chosen for the Lifetime Achievement Award, which carried a purse of iRs 30 lakh. As a goalkeeper, he was part of the Olympic medal-winning teams of 1956 (Melbourne, gold), 1960 (Rome, silver), and 1964 (Tokyo, gold).
- Harjeet Singh and Preeti Dubey were declared the Upcoming Players of the Year (under-21), taking home 110 lakh. Women claimed three of the four awards for Best Goalkeeper (Savita), Defender (Kothajit Singh), Midfielder (Ritu Rani) and Forward (Rani Rampal).
Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunn Suspended for Illegal Bowling Action
- Bangladesh pace sensation Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny were suspended for bowling with an illegal action by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on March 20, 2016. Both the % bowlers have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.
- As a consequence of these suspensions, the Bangladesh cricket team is permitted to apply to the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 Event Technical Committee for approval to replace the two bowlers in the squad for the remainder of the event.
- Arafat and Taskin were reported after their side’s opening match in the World Twenty20 against the Netherlands in Dharamsala on March 9, 2016. Taskin, the fastest bowler in Bangladesh right now, has 21 wickets in 14 ODIs and 9 in 13 T20Is. Sunny, on the other hand, 24 scalps from 16 ODIs and 12 from 10 T20Is.
Yogeshwar Dutt Won Gold Medal in Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament
- Star wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt secured an Olympic quota place for India with a gold-medal finish in the men’s 65 kg freestyle category by defeating Katai Yeerlanbieke from China on March 19, 2016 at Astana, Kazakhstan.
- With this victory, Yogeshwar became the 2nd Indian wrestler after Narsingh Yadav to book a berth in the 74 kg freestyle category for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in August, 2016.
- Yogeshwar had won bronze at the 2012 Olympics in men’s 60 kg freestyle but since then moved up to the 65 kg class. The ongoing tournament is the second qualifying event for the Rio Games.
