New Delhi (India)

  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated 1965 War Exhibition Shauryanjali in New Delhi on September 15; 2015 in the memory of the martyrs. The exhibition celebrates the victory of India over Pakistan and remembers the supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers.
  • The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also unveiled commemorative coin on the occasion. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was a culmination of skirmishes that took place between April, 1965 and September, 1965 between Pakistan and India.
  • This war started following Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against rule by India.                v

Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu)

  • The Department of Maritime History and Marine Archaeology of the Tamil University discovered that a flourishing port town at Mandripattinam fishing hamlet in Thanjavur district as on September 11, 2015.
  • The port town belongs to the Sangam era i.e., Third Century Before Common Era to Third Century Common Era and the Middle Chola period i.e., 850 to 1250 Common Era.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th World Hindi Conference on September 10, 2015 in Bhopal. He also released a commemorative stamp to mark the occasion.
  • During the conference, the participants will deliberate in detail on various aspects for universalisation of Hindi language.
  • This time the theme is Hindi Jagat-Vistar aevam Sambhavnaye. The conference is being held for the third time in the country after a gap of 32 years.
  • The conference is being organised by the Ministry of External Affairs in cooperation with the Madhya Pradesh government.

Bodh Gaya (Bihar)

  • Describing Bodh Gaya as the ‘land of enlightenment’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on September 5, 2015 that the site would develop as the spiritual capital for it to serve as a conversational bond between India and the Buddhist world.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced it while addressing delegates from 90 countries on the concluding day of the International Buddhist Conclave held at Bodh Gaya, a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district of Bihar.
  • In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple located in Bodh Gaya was also accorded with UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Mount McKinley (North America)

  • President Barack Obama announced the renaming of tallest mountain in North America Mount McKinley to its original native name Denali, the traditional Alaska Native name on the eve of a historic three-day presidential visit to Alaska to highlight the issue of climate change.
  • It was renamed following the lead of the State of Alaska, US Department of the Interior (USDol) in conjunction with the US Board on Geographic Names (USBGN). Till 1896, it was named as Denali among the natives of Alaska.
  • It was renamed as Mount McKinley in the honour of William McKinley after he was nominated to become the US President. A new, official height for Denali has been measured at 20310 ft, which is 10 ft less than the previous elevation of 20320 ft.
