Criston won the favour of Rhaenyra when he defeated Ser Gwayne Hightower, the younger brother and champion of Alicent Hightower, King Viserys’ second wife and queen, in 111 AC. Daemon left the capital after a half-year battle with his royal brother. Mushroom claims that Daemon explicitly taught Rhaenyra how to seduce the noble Criston. Criston was so terrified when Rhaenyra approached the knight that he turned her away.
Criston was chosen to lead the white cloaks after Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Harrold Westerling died in 112 AC.
Rhaenyra, Princess of Dragonstone, was forced to marry Ser Laenor Velaryon by her father, King Viserys I Targaryen, in the year 113 A.D. According to Septon Eustace, Criston crept into Rhaenyra’s bedroom to confess his love for her and offer to flee with her to one of the Free Cities, where he would give his sword to a merchant prince. Rhaenyra told him no, that a Targaryen was more than a sellsword’s wife, and that if he could forget his Kingsguard vows, he could forget his marriage vows. Mushroom, on the other hand, claims that Rhaenyra unsuccessfully attempted to seduce Criston in White Sword Tower. Ser Harwin Strong, also known as Breakbones, provided comfort to the princess who had been rejected. Criston went from being Rhaenyra’s most steadfast defender to her worst enemy, and Rhaenyra quickly returned to Driftmark with Harwin as her new sworn shield.
Ser Criston attended Rhaenyra and Laenor’s wedding in 114 AC, a seven-day event complete with food and jousting. He fought with the token of Queen Alicent Hightower. During a fight, he broke Harwin’s collarbone and elbow, earning Mushroom the nickname “Brokenbones.” Criston’s morningstar also cracked Ser Joffrey Lonmouth’s helm, which was Laenor’s favourite. The Knight of Kisses died six days later as a result of the damage to his head. Criston’s actions enraged many people, including King Viserys. However, Queen Alicent disagreed and requested that Criston be made her personal sworn shield. Criston has always been a staunch supporter of Alicent and a member of the Green Party.

When King Viserys I Targaryen died in 129 AC, Criston and Queen Alicent Hightower convened the small council to discuss the next king, but they kept the king’s death a secret. Criston did not want Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen or her husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen, to be in charge. He also spread the rumour that Ser Laenor Velaryon’s children were pigs. Instead of Rhaenrya, the greens wanted to crown her younger half-brother, Prince Aegon the Elder. According to Septon Eustace, Criston slit the throat of Lord Lyman Beesbury, the only councillor who supported Rhaenyra. Mushroom, on the other hand, claims that Criston threw Lyman out a window, killing him. However, neither Eustace nor Mushroom were present at the meeting.
Criston imprisoned any black people who were still in court. Criston went to see Prince Aegon in order to persuade him to accept the Iron Throne. Criston discovered Aegon with a young girl in Flea Bottom, according to Mushroom, but Eustace stated that Aegon was with the daughter of a trader, which was a more respectable situation. According to the septon, Criston told the prince that if he did not take the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra would kill him and his siblings.
During the young king’s coronation in the Dragonpit, Criston placed Aegon the Conqueror’s crown on his head. Criston was known as the Kingmaker because he assisted Aegon II in becoming king.
