Confessions of Madeline and Max Dick Hobbes
Madeline and Max are initially presented to the audience as a mother-son team; however, it quickly becomes clear that they are actually a con artist team with the objective of stealing money from the millionaire Richard Hobbes.
Madeline manages to win Richard’s affections, and the elderly man is so overcome with emotion that he is blind to the fact that he is being taken advantage of right in front of his eyes.
It was decided that Max would act as though he was Madeline’s troublesome son as part of the plot. Richard would make an offer of money to Max in the hopes of luring him away from the situation, but Max would demand the money all at once rather than monthly. After they have saved up enough money, Madeline and Max intend to take off together.
Everything goes according to plan, but suddenly Madeline decides to alter her strategy. She comes to the conclusion that she would be better off marrying the older man when Richard makes the proposal to her.
It will be better for her if he passes away soon and leaves her a billion dollars than if she were to flee with only 720,000 dollars. Nevertheless, there is a single obstacle that she must overcome before the bequest may be legally transferred into her name. This is what brings up the second disadvantage of the argument.
Tom is duped by Max and Sandra
Sandra was a disturbed young woman who was on the verge of having her life completely ruined. Because Max recognizes her ability, he not only pays for her freedom but also assists her in clearing up her mess.
He instructs her on how to become a con artist, and in the meantime, the two of them engage in a sexual encounter. Sandra has the misconception that Max is some kind of Robin Hood figure that preys on people who are already involved in questionable activities. But then there is Tom who arrives.
The objective of this scheme is to arouse Tom’s romantic feelings toward Sandra to the point where he will feel comfortable entrusting Sandra with his wealth. An invented persona known as Jason is developed to play the role of Sandra’s estranged brother who has been associated with undesirable company.
Sandra needs money to keep those nasty guys off her trail, and the events that unfold in such a manner that Tom offers to give her the money personally occur in such a way as to make that possible.
He is under the impression that Sandra is unaware of any information regarding his background, including the fact that his father is a billionaire. Because of this, he decides to put his trust in her and offer her 350 thousand dollars.
After Sandra’s departure, Tom experiences a mental collapse. It doesn’t look good for him in any way, shape, or form. Already having a tense relationship with his father, the fact that he fell for such a ruse only serves to further convince Richard that Tom will not be able to responsibly manage the billions of dollars that are awaiting him in his inheritance.
As a result, he bequeaths the most of it to Madeline and names her as the trustee of the foundation that he establishes for Tom.
Madeline is convinced by Tom and Sandra
Tom is in a very precarious situation now that his father has passed away and he is being disinherited from the fortune.
When Sandra finds out about it, she immediately begins to feel responsible for the fact that she has damaged his life and makes the decision to put things right. She tells him the whole truth about what went down between her and Max, and she also explains Madeline’s part in everything that transpired.
It has come to light that after Max had Tom fooled, he abandoned Sandra to her own devices. She became sober and then tried to make a new beginning for herself. After she hears the news that Richard Hobbes has passed away, she is shown working as a waitress in the restaurant.
Tom is aware of all that Madeline has done, and as a result, he has come to the conclusion that the only way for him to get his inheritance back is to force Madeline to give it up.
Because of this, they will need to con her, and in order to do that, they will need some assistance. Sandra introduces Tom to Tipsy, a man who formerly collaborated with Max and Madeline on a project.
Tipsy delivers them to Goldie, who is a master con artist and has his own crew of con artists. They concoct a detailed scheme in order to trick Madeline and Max, which they carry out together.
Goldie puts on a show as Richard’s right-hand guy in order to pry into the private lives of other individuals. He creates the impression that he has located Sandra, who gives the impression that she has relapsed into her drug addiction while he watches.
Madeline experiences a great deal of unease as a result of Tom and Sandra’s visit to their home. She is concerned that others may learn the truth about her, which could put her recently acquired fortune in jeopardy or even land her in jail.
In exchange for her promise to maintain her secret, Sandra gives her the mission of locating Max. Madeline complies with the request, and this results in Sandra and Max coming into contact with one another.
Max and Madeline didn’t aware that Tom and Sandra had this meeting scheduled, but it was part of their plan. Tom gets up there and manipulates the events so that he winds up getting shot as a result of his efforts.
To Madeline, it looks like Tom is dead. Madeline decides that the only way to get rid of the blood on her hands is to give up her inheritance.
It is then donated to the foundation by her. In point of fact, neither the pistol nor his blood were genuine components of the scene. This indicates that Tom now owns the entire bequest, and that Madeline is out of luck when it comes to receiving any of it.
It is vital to give a little attention to the convoluted set-up that brings us there in order to completely explain the twist ending that comes at the end of the story.
The story of the movie is recounted in a non-linear fashion, and we are introduced to a number of characters played by Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, John Lithgow, Justice Smith, and Briana Middleton. These people are all connected to one another by a chain of cons.
Max and Madeline: Con Artist Couple
Max and Madeline, a highly successful con artist couple, are the personas that Stan and Moore bring to life through their performances. Richard Hobbes, a wealthy company entrepreneur, is their most recent mark (Lithgow).
By using a con in which Max pretends to be Madeline’s troubled son, the two are able to con Hobbes out of significant sums of money. However, things take an unexpected turn when Madeline decides to remain with Hobbes and marry him after the con is over, rather than returning to Max as had appeared to be the initial plan.
In the meantime, Max had realized that Hobbes’s son Tom (Smith) could also be a potential victim during this earlier con, and working with his new accomplice Sandra (Middleton), he manages to con him out of a significant amount of money. Meanwhile, during this earlier con, Max had realized that Hobbes’s son Tom (Smith) could also be a potential victim. This is the portion of the movie that is presented to the audience first.
