Early Life

Jonathan Ian Scott and Andrew (Drew) Alfred Scott, identical twin brothers, were born on April 28, 1979 in Vancouver, British Columbia. John was born four minutes before Drew, whose birth came as a huge surprise to his parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, who thought Joanne was only having one kid!

Their father had arrived from Scotland as a youth, dreaming of becoming an American cowboy like the ones he saw on television. He worked in the film industry until the late 1970s, when he left to raise his family.

Jim and Joanne relocated the family to Maple Ridge, Canada, to a horse farm. The brothers began their first business, JAM, at the age of seven, producing nylon covered hangers. They sold them door to door until a woman placed an order for thousands of them. The boys’ ongoing job search led them to an ad for child clowns to perform in parades. They used to make $100 per hour performing as clowns in parades.

Their father frequently renovated family properties, and at the age of eight, he hired John and Drew to build and repair fences, decks, and barns. Throughout their childhood, they continued to help their father with numerous tasks. At the age of 14, the family began construction on their parents’ dream home in Alberta, Canada.

The brothers attended Thomas Haney Secondary School before leaving for college in Calgary, just as the family’s dream home was being built.

Early Career

Drew and Jonathan began purchasing and remodeling homes as youngsters. Despite their desire to be entertainers, the two did not want to be “starving artists.” They reasoned that investing in real estate early on would serve as a sort of buffer for what they actually wanted to do. Also, they acquired their first house at the age of 18, during their first semester in college.

They used a vendor take-back mortgage and put down $250 for a seven-bedroom property across from their institution. Following improvements, the brothers rented it out and earned $800 per month in rent. While attending university, they sold it a year later for a $50,000 profit. Throughout their late adolescence, they continued to acquire and flip houses.

Before embarking on a career in real estate, the brothers dabbled in performing, with John attempting to work as an illusionist. John walked out of college at the age of 19 and began creating large-sale illusions with the goal of producing a touring theatre performance. When a fellow magician approached him and pretended to be a friend of a friend, John agreed to lend him some of his illusions. Unfortunately, the individual stole the entire production, ruining it and left Jonathan $80,000 in debt.

He was unable to collect what he owed and, depressed and embarrassed, did not inform his parents of what had occurred. At the age of 20, John was forced to declare bankruptcy. Drew, meantime, had dropped out of college and was now working as a flight attendant for WestJet. John returned to school to study building and design at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. This is when he obtained his contractor’s licence. Drew, meantime, obtained his real estate licence in 2004.

Jonathan and Drew were both taking on little acting parts at the same time. Drew and his brother both participated on the Canadian television sitcom Breaker High. Drew also appeared in Small ville, and Jonathan appeared on The X-Files.
