After his family relocated to the north in the early 1990s, he began playing with Chorley Panthers when he was seven years old. Tomkins’ family migrated to Wigan in order for him to further his career there. Sports Career of Sam Tomkins
In 2008, he made his Wigan debut against Whitehaven in a Challenge Cup game, becoming the first rugby league player to score five tries on debut in the top flight.
Tomkins’ breakthrough year would come in 2009. During the season, he appeared in 27 games, scoring 15 tries, and made his league debut against Harlequins RL. He became Wigan’s go-to stand-off, was named to the Super League Dream Team, and was named Super League Young Player of the Year as well as the club’s Player of the Year. In 2010, Tomkins moved from stand-off to fullback under Wigan’s new head coach Michael Maguire, whilst also making sporadic appearances at scrum-half.
Wigan won the league title for the first time since 1998 that year, and Tomkins collected his first player award. After appearing in every game for Wigan in 2010, he retained his spot on the Dream Team and was named Rookie of the Year by the Rugby League International Federation.
Tomkins scored a hat-trick in his international debut against Wales. He went on to play in the 2009 Four Nations final and three more times for England. Tomkins tied the record for the most tries scored by an England player in a single game when he scored four against France in a Test match in the midst of the 2010 season. Tomkins played in all three of England’s Four Nations games later that year, but the team was eliminated in the first round. He also played for England in the first International Origin game against the Exiles in 2011. Sam went on to win the 2012 Man of Steel award.
Sam Tomkins’ Childhood
Tomkins was born on March 23, 1989, in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England.
After Sam’s older brother Joel was born in Warrington, the family moved to Milton Keynes due to his father’s profession.
Logan, his younger brother, was born in Chorley in the early 1990s when his family migrated there.
When Tomkins was seven years old, his father took Sam and Joel to their first Chorley Panthers ARLFC game. This was Tomkins’ first time seeing rugby league.
When Tomkins and his older brother were nine years old, they left the Chorley Panthers and began spending more time with the amateur Wigan St. Patrick’s club, a feeder group for the professional Wigan club.
To further their careers, the family relocated from Chorley to Wigan, and Tomkins played for the club there until he was in his mid-teens. The club’s chairman, Bill Atherton, remarked on Tomkins’ career at Wigan St. Patrick’s, saying, “When Sam rose through the club, it was evident that there was something unusual going on.” He has always stood out for being one of a kind.” Tomkins was admitted into the Wigan Warriors scholarship programme when he was twelve years old, and at the age of sixteen, the club’s academy offered him a part-time position.
Professional Career
Wigan decided to waive Trent Barrett’s contract, and the team immediately began looking for a long-term replacement. Tomkins was given a one-year contract extension that would keep him with the team through the end of the 2010 season, with an additional year option. After the players signed the agreement, Wigan head coach Brian Noble noted that Tomkins and colleague Mark Flanagan “both have the ability to make an impact in Super League in years to come.”

For the first time, Tomkins came off the bench during Lee Briers’ testimonial game, a 22-30 loss to the Warrington Wolves in an unofficial preseason friendly.
Noble then gave Tomkins, who was 19 at the time, his first team debut against Whitehaven in a Challenge Cup fifth-round encounter on May 12.

Despite this, Tomkins was substituted by Thomas Leuluai in the team’s second game against Warrington, delaying Tomkins’ Super League debut.
His 2008 season highlights were a hat-trick against Castleford and a five-try performance against Harlequins RL. He spent the rest of the season in the reserves. After scoring four tries against Hull FC’s reserves, Wigan reserve coach Shaun Wane projected Tomkins will play in at least ten Super League games in 2009. The club’s chairman, Ian Lenagan, also backed him up, saying, “I think Sam is going to be a world-class half-back and we want to give him his chance.” Tomkins was voted Reserve Team Player of the Year at Wigan’s inaugural awards night.
Tomkins received the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Medal in 2009.
