“My mom was in an abusive relationship, which was one of the reasons we moved around so much as kids.” I wanted to stay and assist her, but I didn’t want to be a nuisance, and I didn’t have much money. “I didn’t want her to have to look after me and feed me,” she explained in a video clip to Olympic Channel.
“We went to the Women’s Refuge, a New Zealand charity where women may get away for free.” It was the last thing I could think of doing, and boy, did it affect my life. When my mother learned she could be happy, I saw her stand on her own two feet.
Most people would feel pity for being placed in such a circumstance, but Tui has a different perspective.
“My childhood was difficult, but I’m so grateful it occurred,” she stated unequivocally.
“I no longer take things for granted, which has helped me in my profession.” I want everyone’s voice on the team to be heard, even though we all come from diverse backgrounds. Our differences are a source of strength for us.
“But no matter what was going on in my life or where I was, sports always made me happy,” the 28-year-old added.
“I’d make new friends and have something to look forward to every week if I joined a sports team.”
Rugby is New Zealand’s national sport and an integral component of the country’s culture.
Tui grew up with most of the best players being men, and she spent much of her time playing netball.
When she went to college, though, she didn’t have the money to play 15-a-side rugby, which was her first exposure to women’s rugby.
“I didn’t even realize women’s rugby existed until I went to college,” she added.
“Even though I enjoyed netball, I had to take a bus to the courts, which was a mission for a student.” Our student housing was just near to the rugby grounds, and a girl approached me and asked if I wanted to go for a run with her and a few others.
“So I paid $20 on some boots, which was a lot of money at the time, and had a crack.”
“It was simply a bunch of women that wanted to bump into each other, and I couldn’t believe how lovely and inviting they were as well.” They didn’t care how excellent I was or where I came from; all they cared about was the numbers!”
No one treated Tui with care on the field, no matter how beautiful his reception was.
Even while she was more agile than many of her colleagues, she was also much lighter and was frequently “knocked around” in 15-a-side games as a result.
After a fairly successful start to rugby, she decided to change her mind.
“One day, someone gave me a pamphlet about sevens rugby,” she explained.
“The field was the same size as 15s, but there were half the people.” It was considerably easier to run around people. “Made especially for me!”
The swift player soon rose through the ranks of sevens, and she was invited to test out for the New Zealand sevens team in 2011. She made her debut in Fiji a year later.
The haka is a prominent feature of rugby, and being on the national squad required participating in it.

“The Maori culture is the most beautiful thing,” she remarked, adding that “a lot of the girls can speak Maori.”
“As New Zealanders, we are so pleased to be a part of it, and understanding what it means means a lot to us.” It is about carrying your entire body and spirit wherever you go. Representing all of your relatives and ancestors in your act and bringing them to life.
“It’s quite humbling that so many people enjoy it, and I’d love to see other countries demonstrate their cultures on the field in the same way.”
When it was revealed that rugby sevens will be contested for the first time at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Tui and a couple of her teammates fought hard to get professional contracts for New Zealand’s women, just as they had for the men.
“I got a few ill-fitting clothes, but that was it.” So I set a goal for myself to obtain some fundamental contracts. As a result, we wouldn’t have to workout at 5 a.m. or after 11 p.m.”
Tui and her teammates pushed hard and played with zeal on the field, and in the end, they were able to centralize contracts for women.
“We spoke with the governing body and explained exactly what we brought to the game, how frequently we won in comparison to the men, and why we deserve everything they got.”
Both New Zealand teams will have equal access to Tauranga’s coaches and facilities in 2020.
“The Olympics provided New Zealand sevens players with the opportunity to compete professionally in their sport.”
“I’m astounded by how far we’ve come.” Being able to pursue my goal full-time has been a tremendous blessing.
Despite the fact that this incident ruined her life, she believes that studying the sport as an unpaid amateur paved the stage for the current team’s success.
“And that eliminates anyone who isn’t there because they enjoy it and have a nice heart,” she explained.
