Balram Jakhar

  • Former Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Balram Jakhar passed away on February 3, 2016 at the age of 92. As a popular leader he enriched India’s parliamentary democracy in his long political journey.
  • He was elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for two consecutive terms from 1980 to 1989.
  • He had served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh front 2004 to 2009.
  • The nation will forever remember his contributions, particularly to the cause of farming community.
  • He was the first Asian to be elected as Chairman of Commonwealth Parliamentarian Executive forum.
  • Union government had awarded him with ‘Udyan Pandit’ Award in 1975 for his contribution to Horticulture.

SS Tarapore

  • Former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India SS Tarapore, died on February 2, 2016 at the age of 80. He was an extremely well-regarded Central banker, particularly in the areas of economic research and monetary policy.
  • A career Central banker, Tarapore joined RBI as a , research officer in 1961 and demined office as Deputy Governor in September, 1996.
  • His contributions as a member on the two Narasimham Committees set the tone for first generation reforms in the financial sector.
  • The roadmap he enunciated for India’s journey towards capital account convertibility in the report of the Committee on Capital Account Convertibility of which he was the Chairman, though much criticised initially, was accepted later by the world as the way to go on the road
    to convertibility.

Intizar Husain

  • Veteran Urdu short story writer, poet and journalist who was the first Pakistani author ever to be nominated for the Man Booker International Prize for fiction, Intizar Husain, passed away on February 2, 2016 at the age of 93.
  • Born on December 7, 1923 at Dibai in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh in India, he migrated to Lahore in 1947. He did his MA (Urdu) in 1946 from the Meerut College. He worked in various newspapers and retired from Daily Mashriq in 1988.
  • Husain was conferred the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by France in 2014. He was among the 10 finalists for the Man Booker International Prize for fittIon in 2013. He was the first Pakistani and the first Urdu writer ever to be nominated for the International award.
