Priti Patel

  • Indian-origin Tory Member of British Parliament Priti Patel, has been appointed Minister of State for employment in the Department of Work and Pensions in British Prime Minister David Cameron’s new Cabinet on May 11, 2015.
  • She won the recent elections by securing 58% of the votes from Witham. She was the exchequer secretary to the treasury from July, 2014 to May, 2015. She was first elected as MP for Witham in May”, 2010.
  • She had led the British delegation in Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015 and was awarded the Jewels of Gujarat honour at a reception in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in January, 2015.

Newly Appointed Governors

  • Pranab Mukherjee, President of India appointed Governors in four North-Eastern States and shifted two Governors on May 12, 2015. The appointments will take effect from the dates the incumbents assume charge of their respective offices.
  • Shanmuganthan has been appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya.
  • Lieutenant General Nirbhay Sharma (Retd.) has been transferred to Mizoram from Arunachal Pradesh for the remainder of his term which lasts till 2018.
  • JP Rajkhowa was appointed as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • BJP leader Tathagata Roy, a former Chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit has been appointed as the Governor of Tripura.
  • Syed Ahmed, Governor of Jharkhand, has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur for the remainder of his term.
  • Droupadi Murmu, former Odisha Minister has been appointed as Governor of Jharkhand.

KV Thomas

  • KV Thomas, outgoing Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and senior – Congress leader, has been renominated to the post on May 9, 2015 for a second term till April, 2016.
  • The PAC is one of the most important finance committees along with the Committee on Estimates and the Committee on Public Undertakings. Since 1967, the post of the PAC Chairman Has been held by a senior member of the main Opposition party.

Satish Reddy

  • Satish Reddy, the Chairman of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the National Safety Council (NSC). He replaced Venu Srinivasan, who steered the workings of the Council since July, 2011.
  • The NSC is an apex body which generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on safety, health and environment at the national level.
  • It is set-up by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The NSC conducts specialised courses and workshops across the nation, carries out safety audits and risk assessments, facilitates awareness camps in organisations.

KV Kamath

  • KV Kamath has been nominated as the head of the New Development Bank of BRICS. India has conveyed its decision about the nomination to other BRICS nations i.e., Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. Kamath’s five-year term is to be followed by a Brazilian aAd then a Russian.
  • The BRICS had agreed to set-up the $ 100 billion New development bank in 2014, which will fund infrastructure projects in developing nations, would have its headquarters in Shanghai.
  • It was a step taken as one that could challenge the dominance of the West in the international financial system.

Cyriac Joseph

  • Justice Cyriac Joseph, member of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), was authorised to act as the Chairperson of the Commission on May 11, 2015 until the appointment of a new Chairperson in place of Justice KG Balakrishnan who has completed his tenure.
  • Justice Joseph’s appointment will be effective from May 13, 2015.
  • He hailed from Kaiphuza village of Kottayam district in Kerala
  • He remained as a Judge of the Supreme Court from 2008 to 2012.

David Cameron

  •  Prime Minister of United Kingdom David Cameron, is set for a second term as his Conservative Party won a majority in the UK’s hotly- contested polls on May 8, 2015 by winning 331 seats out of total 650 seats in House of Commons.
  • Labour Party has won 232 seats with 30.4% vote share, emerging as largest opposition party. Scottish National Party (SNP) has emerged third largest party in this election by winning 56 seats with 9% of vote share.
  • SNP has won 56 seats of the 59 seats from Scotland.
  • David Cameron vowed to hold a referendum on the country’s EU membership and quick devolution of powers to Scotland and Wales.

Sanjita Pradhan

  • Sanjita Pradhan, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Technology, nominated to the US President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific . Islanders (AAPIs). Obama announced the nomination on May 9, 2015.
  • Sanjita Pradhan is a Nepali American. She is currently serving as an executive officer of the Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs at the Iowa. Department of Human Rights since 2013. Before this post, she served as Resettlement Director at Catholic Charities of Des Moines, Iowa.

Achal Kumar Jyoti

  • Former Chief Secretary of Gujarat Achal Kumar Jyoti was appointed as an Election Commissioner of India on May 7, 2015. His tenure will commence from the day he assumes his charge.
  • After HS Brahma demitted the office of the CEC in April, 2015 and Nasim Zaidi got elevated to the top post, two posts in the three-member Election Commission had become vacant.
  • Achal is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1975-batch. He has served as Kandla Port Trust Chairman. Jyoti retired from active service in January, 2013.
