The story of Stromboli followed the life of a hopeless mother who was held back by her worries and the events of her past.
Even though she had no physical ties to the past, she was emotionally bound to the events that had caused the suffering.
She decides to take a trip to a nearby island so that she can concentrate on being fully present in the here and now.
In the opening scene of the film, the main character, Sara, is in the midst of a self-destructive episode as she strives for her “Titanic moment.”
On the other hand, as the movie goes on, it becomes clear that she is freewheeling, reckless, and even a little bit insane. The events that take place in the novel take an unusual turn.

Stromboli (Netflix): Is It Based On Reality?
Although just a small portion of the events shown in “Stromboli” are based on actual events, this is not a lie.
The screenplay was adapted by Roos Ouwehand and Paula van der Oest from the 2018 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name written by Dutch author Saskia Noort. Van Erp developed the film using the script written by Ouwehand and van der Oest.
Although Noort is best recognized for his work as an author of criminal thrillers, his latest book, “Stromboli,” is his debut in the genres of memoir and traditional writing.
Sara, the protagonist of Noort’s book, is a journalist and writer who, on the surface, appears to have the ideal family life with her husband and two children.
But soon, that illusion will be shattered when she decides to end her marriage due to her husband’s drinking and her own issues with the horrors of her past. When Sara was a girl, she was raped.
Her struggles with her history make it difficult for her to cope.
Following the breakup of her marriage, Sara quickly discovered that her friends and neighbors had turned their backs on her. Noort drew inspiration from her own life in a number of different areas, including the rape, which was one of those areas.
To summarize everything, ‘Stromboli’ is based on a factual story and contains a considerable quantity of autobiographical aspects; nevertheless, these components have been fictionalized at least twice — once when Noort wrote about them, and a second time when the film adaptation of Noort’s book was made.
Stromboli (Netflix): Plot Summary

She will go there to take part in a retreat called “From Fear to Love,” which is designed to assist individuals in getting past the numerous transitions and losses that life brings.
The vacation begins with a lighthearted excursion filled with sightseeing and self-exploration, during which time the dashing Hans, played by Pieter Embrechts, captures her attention right away.
But when the head instructor Jens (Christian Hillborg) moves forward with his New Age-y curriculum, avoiding the issues that brought the participants there is no longer a viable choice.
This is because avoiding the issues is no longer an option. It is necessary for Sara and the other people in her position to respond to his direct command, which compels them to confront the demons of their past head-on.

Stromboli: What Led To Sara’s Divorce?
Sara has never been able to find the strength within herself to talk to anyone about the rape that she had when she was a teenager because it caused her to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
She did not discuss it with her own parents, nor did she discuss it with her own husband or daughter.
It is not until around halfway through Stromboli, and then only in brief glances throughout the entirety of the movie, that her difficult relationship with her husband is revealed.
She used to have a wonderful relationship with him, but as a result of her repressing all of her trauma within herself, their intimacy has begun to go away. Their relationship was once very successful.
The difficulties that arose between Sara and her husband as a result of the fact that Sara did not participate in her husband’s desire to have sex, which is understandable, caused him to become increasingly dissatisfied.
In addition to this, Sara’s refusal to open up to him was an additional source of frustration for him.
In the end, their marriage would end because they were unable to work through the severe dysfunction in their relationship.
What Did Sara Go Through In Her Earlier Years?
When Sara was a teenager—roughly the same age as her daughter is right now—she was a victim of sexual assault.
At one point during the party, she got quite drunk, and a person who later raped her took advantage of the fact that she was unable to defend herself.
He sneaked up on her as she was sicking herself up outside the party, consoled her, and then pushed himself on her after they made out. The events that followed left Sara with emotional wounds that will never fully heal.
One of the most detrimental effects of the occurrence was the fact that she was unable to discuss it with anybody else. And all the while that she kept it to herself, the trauma built and festered to the point that everything that she values most in the world begins to crumble.
As a consequence of this, her marriage to her husband comes to an end, and the relationship she has with her daughter deteriorates to the point where the girl now despises her mother.

Stromboli: Is There A From Fear to Love Retreat?
In New Age religious activities, the phrase “through fear to love” is commonly employed. It’s not necessarily something specific to the Stromboli retreat.
Roos Ouwehand and Paula van der Oest wrote the screenplay, which is an adaptation of Dutch novelist Saskia Noort’s semi-autobiographical book of the same name published in 2018.
While living at a comparable facility on Stromboli, Noort wrote a significant portion of the novel. “However, these are frequently business models where consumers come for a quick fix,” she noted in an interview.
So, while we don’t know if there is a From Fear to Love retreat on Stromboli, we do know that Noort was in a New Age retreat when she visited the volcanic island for a vacation.
The retreat is only mentioned in the latter section of the story, where she names the institution From Fear to Love. In contrast, the plot of the film concentrates mostly upon Sara’s stay at the retreat because that is what van Erp found most compelling about the script.
Stromboli: Filming Locations
The movie “Stromboli” was shot on location in Italy and the Netherlands, more specifically on the island of Stromboli and in North Holland.
The primary photography for the drama film started at the beginning of November 2021 and lasted until the end of the month. On the other hand, it appears that the production team went back into the studio in January 2022 to record a few more pieces.
Now, without spending any more time, let’s accompany Sara on her little trip and obtain a full account of all the exact sites that feature in the movie that can be found on Netflix!
The production team decided to shoot the majority of ‘Stromboli’ on the same picturesque island because the majority of the story takes place on Stromboli, which is an island located off the north coast of Sicily.
This decision was made in order to give viewers a more immersive experience and to ensure that the film is as authentic as it can be.
The island’s location in the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as the fact that it is home to one of Italy’s four active volcanoes (Mount Stromboli), is something that is brought up multiple times throughout the course of the film.
It would appear that some additional segments of ‘Stromboli’ were recorded in the province of North Holland, which is located in the most northwestern section of the Netherlands.
On the shore of the North Sea within the province in January 2022, the cast and crew members were sighted recording a few scenes at the village and seaside resort of Bergen aan Zee, which is located within the province.
In North Holland, which is sandwiched between the North Sea, the Wadden Sea, the IJsselmeer, and the Markermeer, a sizeable amount of the land is comprised of polder land that is located below sea level.
