Odisha became First State to give Social Welfare Benefits to Transgender Community
- Odisha became the first region in the country to give transgender people social welfare benefits such as a pension, housing and foodgrains on June 2, 2016.
- The members of the transgender community will be given Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards which allow them to access benefits under various government welfare programme like free housing, 100 days of paid work annually, pensions and loans to startup their own businesses etc.
- The Supreme Court recognised transgender as a legal third gender and called on the government to ensure their equal treatment in 2014.
