Two Members of Anglo-Indian Community Nominated to Lok Sabha

  • President Pranab Mukherjee has nominated Prof. Richard Hay and George Baker as members of the Anglo-Indian Community to the Lok Sabha on July 23, 2015. Richard Hay, a professor of economics from Kerala, teaches economics in various academic institutes in India as well as abroad.
  • Whereas Baker has acted in several Assamese and Bengali movies since 1 He had joined BJP in 2014 and unsuccessfully contested on a party ticket from Howrah in West Bengal. His most notable film was ‘Chameli Memsaab’ that won national film award in 1975.
  • According to Article-331 of the Constitution of India, President may appoint two members from Anglo-Indian Community to Lok Sabha, if in his opinion that this community is not represented adequately.

India Ranked at 12th Position in Terms of Power Generation from Nuclear Source

  • Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), published data in May, 2015 where it mentioned, India stood at 12th position in . terms of power generation.
  • But, India stood at 6th position in terms of number of reactors in operation country-wise, globally. There are thirty one countries including India in the world which generate electricity from nuclear source.
  • The current installed nuclear power capacity in India is 5780 MW, which is expected to increase to 10080 MW on progressive completion of projects under commissioning/ construction by 2019.

First All Women Trans Continental Road Expedition Ragged-off

  • First All Women Trans Continental Road Expedition from Delhi to London flagged-off from Major Dhyanchand Stadium, New Delhi on July 23, 2015. The expedition symbolizes the spirit of adventure of Indian women.
  • Three women are participating in the expedition. They are Nidhi Tiwari, Rashmi Koppar and Soumaya Goel. They will reach United Kingdom by covering a distance of 15000 km and 14 countries in 55 days.
  • 14 countries are Myanmar, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and France. The women team will be travelling in one vehicle without any backup vehicle.

Supreme Court Quashed Centre’s Review Plea Regarding OBC Status for Jats

  • The Supreme Court (SC) quashed the review pleas of NDA government and Jat lobbies seeking to declare the Jat community as socially and economically backward class to grant them OBC reservation on July 21, 2015.
  • In this regard, a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed the plea filed by them.
  • They filed a plea regarding the review of supreme court’s earlier verdict by which it had declared the Centre’s decision to grant OBC status to JAT community as unconstitutional.
  • Supreme Court had struck down this controversial decision of Union government by declaring it unconstitutional in March, 2015 and said it as a reflection of negative and retrograde governance.

CCEA Approved Extending CCTNS Deadline

  • The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal of the Union Home Ministry to extend the deadline for implementation of Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project on July 21, 2015.
  • The implementation of this ambitious online system, which will help in police verification for issuing passport, improving police citizen interface and speed up delivery of public services through police across the country was extended till March, 2017 by the government.
  • The project would lead access to crime and criminal related database by investigating officers throughout the country. The CCEA also approved additional five years phase for operation and maintenance of the CCTNS up to March, 2022.

‘Surakshit Khadya Abhiyan’ Launched

  • Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan, launched a campaign ‘Surakshit Khadya Abhiyan’ on July 21, 2015 to create mass awareness and capacity building for safe and hygienic food.
  • The campaign is planned by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and its partners including Consumer Organisation VOICE, . and National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI). It is an effort towards building a culture of food safety in the country.
  • Under the campaign, nationwide sensitization sessions on cleaning, hygiene and sanitation for safe food, walkathons and media dissemination program’s for consumers, street food industries will be organised across the country.
