The following week, South Florida defeated Norvell’s Tigers in a shootout, 49-42. To end the regular season, they defeated Cincinnati 34-27 on November 18 and #18 Houston 48-44 in a shootout on November 22. The Tigers accepted a slot in the 2016 Boca Raton Bowl, where they were defeated by Western Kentucky by a score of 51-31.

Riley Ferguson started 13 games in 2016 and threw for 3,698 yards and 32 touchdowns, breaking Paxton Lynch’s previous single-season record. Chip Long, the Tigers’ co-offensive coordinator, left the team after the 2016 season to join Brian Kelly’s staff at Notre Dame. Long was replaced as the team’s lone offensive coordinator by Darrell Dickey.

On May 12, 2017, it was confirmed that Norvell had been handed a one-year contract extension until the 2021 season by the University of Memphis, along with raises for his assistant coaches.
