Hannah Hidalgo: Revving Up Her Game for Notre Dame
Unveiling a Rising Star
In the midst of the action-packed girls’ game during the SLAM Summer Classic Vol. 4, Rucker Park witnessed an awe-inspiring moment that echoed for blocks around.1
What stirred the crowd to such a frenzy? Hannah Hidalgo’s Eastbay layup, executed flawlessly despite a foul, and the subsequent and-1 free throw. Undoubtedly, the standout play of the weekend.
Weeks later, Hidalgo reflects on that magical moment. “When I hit it, I was just thinking, Wow, I can’t believe I just did that!” she says. “I was in disbelief, and I don’t even remember what I was saying.”
Rising to the Challenge
To pull off a feat like that on the legendary court requires a combination of skill, confidence, and undeniable swagger – qualities that perfectly encapsulate this talented high school senior from New Jersey.
Currently representing Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, Hidalgo holds the fifth spot in ESPN’s national ranking for the Class of 2023.
Hidalgo’s game is characterized by its nimbleness, speed, and unyielding aggression. Standing as a not-so-giant guard, she poses a significant threat to any defender. And did we mention her exceptional defensive skills?
The jaw-dropping play at Rucker Park was set in motion by Hidalgo’s swift pickpocketing of an opponent on the other end of the court.
“My favorite aspect of my game is my defense and the way my defensive energy impacts my teammates,” she asserts confidently. “Getting stops, securing loose balls, and diving on the floor all energize my team.”

Hidalgo’s dedication to defense is evident in her junior year statistics, where she averaged an impressive 6.2 steals per game, in addition to 26.2 points and 6.1 rebounds.
Her boundless energy is a family trait, with her entire family deeply entrenched in the world of basketball. Both her parents and her brothers and cousins share a basketball background.
“During my early years, I was always quiet and reserved,” Hidalgo shares. “I would score a few buckets and head home. But once I entered high school, I started gaining confidence. I think it’s in my genes, something I got from my mom and perhaps a gift from God. My mom and my cousin Dre are the talkers.”
Hidalgo’s father, Orlando, played a pivotal role in her development as a coach throughout her upbringing and took on the role of head coach at Paul VI High School last year.
Orlando had been coaching the Team Flight AAU program, which included current New York Knick Cam Reddish, but his desire for more success for his daughter’s team prompted him to take the head coaching position.
Under his guidance, the school achieved a remarkable 24-4 record and secured a spot in the South Jersey, Non-Public A final.
“My dad knows what he’s talking about, so it’s been great,” Hannah says. “During games, it’s easy for me to come forward and speak up if I see something on the court. I can always say, ‘Hey, I see this, and we need to adjust.'”
While she may be reserved off the court, Hidalgo’s leadership skills shine on it, where she guides her team on defense, orchestrates plays on offense, and motivates her teammates.
A Future Shining Bright
As she approaches her senior year, Hidalgo’s college recruitment process is heating up. In August, she unveiled her top choices, including Michigan, Notre Dame, Duke, Stanford, Ohio State, and UCF.
“I want to bring whatever defensive prowess they need. I aim to infuse energy on the defensive end that a school may be lacking. I aspire to be a vocal leader, a program champion, and lead my team to a championship.”
Hannah Hidalgo is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the court, and her journey to collegiate stardom promises to be nothing short of electrifying.

Hannah Hidalgo’s Spectacular Debut for Notre Dame Women’s Basketball
Hannah Hidalgo Shines in Notre Dame Debut
Niele Ivey, Notre Dame’s head coach, had been singing praises about Hannah Hidalgo during the preseason. As the No. 5 recruit in her class and the 2023 Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year, Hidalgo had generated significant buzz. However, it didn’t take long for her to live up to the hype.4
Hidalgo’s Explosive Start
In her first eight minutes on the collegiate basketball court, Hidalgo managed to put up an impressive 13 points. By the end of the game, she had amassed a total of 31 points, shooting 10-of-24 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. She demonstrated her prowess at the free-throw line, going 8-of-12.
Additionally, Hidalgo contributed with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. It’s worth noting that she was responsible for six of Notre Dame’s 18 turnovers, but her overall performance was remarkable.
Record-Breaking McDonald’s All-American Game
Hannah Hidalgo’s talent was evident even before her debut for Notre Dame. In the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game, she made a significant impact.
Scoring a record-breaking 26 points and tying the steals record with eight, Hidalgo left a lasting impression. Her inclusion in the Notre Dame roster adds another potent scoring option to an already formidable guard lineup, making them one of the best in the nation.
Strong Guard Presence at Notre Dame
Notre Dame boasts an impressive guard group, and Hidalgo’s addition further solidifies their status as a force to be reckoned with in women’s college basketball. Sonia Citron, a 6-1 junior guard, contributed 12 points, even on a day where her shooting wasn’t at its best (5-of-15, 1-of-6 from 3).
Anticipating a Strong Season
The Fighting Irish were considered a strong contender for the Final Four last season before a setback. One of the nation’s top point guards and passers, who goes by the name of Miles, suffered a knee injury during the ACC tournament, dashing their hopes. However, there’s renewed optimism this season.
Miles has been cleared to play, but Coach Ivey is cautious about her return, preferring not to rush her onto the court. With Miles back in the lineup, Notre Dame is poised to become a favorite in the ACC and a strong contender in the upcoming tournament.
