2018

After six seasons as Somerset captain, Trescothick stepped down in January 2016 to allow experienced new overseas signing Chris Rogers to take over. Trescothick finished his first season without the captaincy since retiring from England duty with a season average of more than 53, becoming the Somerset cricketer with the most first-class catches in the club’s history.

He extended his contract with Somerset for the 2017 season, during which he broke Harold Gimblett’s record for most first-class centuries for Somerset, and signed another 12-month extension with Somerset in August 2017, through the end of the 2018 season, his 26th season with Somerset.

I think his future will be in domestic cricket and that may even help him with this particular form of illness. I think over the next two or three years you’ll see Marcus Trescothick performing wonderfully well in county cricket.” Journalist Andrew Miller called for an end to the public’s growing criticism of Trescothick’s decision, while Paul Hayward of the Guardian slammed those who criticised the Somerset player’s actions.

Despite returning home, Trescothick reaffirmed his commitment to the club in December by signing a new three-year contract with an option for a fourth year. For the 2010 season, he was named captain.

2009

Trescothick continued his career with Somerset into 2009, having received a benefit year as well as a new stand in his name from his county. He averaged 46.59 in the four-day game during his benefit year, including three centuries, and he began 2009 with 52 against Warwickshire. Trescothick was also named a patron of Anxiety UK on April 20, 2009, following the publication of his biography.

Trescothick found success in all aspects of the game as the season progressed. By the 16th of June, he had scored a hundred in both the Friends Provident Trophy and the County Championship, with averages in the high 50s in both.

2008

Somerset announced on 15 March 2008 that Trescothick had decided to withdraw from the county’s pre-season tour of the UAE due to a recurrence of his condition, prompting many to speculate that, given this latest setback, it appeared increasingly unlikely that Trescothick would represent England again. Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose, on the other hand, stated that he did not “see the setback as a major problem” and that Trescothick would be able to play for Somerset the following season and “for many years” afterwards.

He would never return to international cricket, however, and announced his retirement on March 22, 2008. He stated that he had “tried on numerous occasions to make it back to the international stage and it has proven to be a lot more difficult than [he] expected” and reiterated his desire to play domestic cricket. Later, he stated that his decision to withdraw from Somerset’s Dubai tour was the catalyst for his decision.

2007

Trescothick put an end to speculation about his international future when he stated that he would like to be considered for a spot on the national team in the future. England’s management team remained committed to him, and he was named to the initial 25-man squad for the 2007 Test series against the West Indies.

Trescothick began his comeback to cricket on 8 April 2007, after recovering from a double hernia operation and proving himself fit for the start of the county season, by scoring 256 from 117 balls in a 50 over match against Devon, helping Somerset to 502-4 off their 50 overs.

2006

Trescothick abruptly returned home from England’s tour of India in February 2006, citing personal reasons. Later, he blamed it on a virus.

Trescothick returned to Test cricket in May, scoring 106 against Sri Lanka to become the English season’s first Test centurion. The century, however, proved to be the high point of Trescothick’s Test summer, as he only reached a half-century once in the following six Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. This run of form was bolstered later in the year by two ODI centuries, one against Ireland and one against Sri Lanka.

He withdrew from the remaining ODIs against Pakistan in September, citing a stress-related illness, and asked not to be considered for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy squad. Trescothick was later thought to be suffering from clinical depression, which was also the source of much of his trouble in 2006.

2005

Trescothick performed better in the 2005 Ashes series than in the previous one, becoming the series’ second highest run scorer (behind the prolific Kevin Pietersen). During the third Test, he became the fastest player in Test cricket history to reach 5,000 runs. He also became the third player in history to score over 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year: 1,004 in 2003, 1,003 in 2004, and 1,323 in 2005.

During the series, he also had the dubious distinction of becoming Glenn McGrath’s 500th and Shane Warne’s 600th Test wicket. 2000
