Luke Fickell’s Professional Career
Luke’s career began at St. Francis DeSales High School. After redshirting for the Buckeyes in 1992, Fickell distinguished himself as a defensive player, setting a school record with 50 consecutive starts at nose guard from 1993 to 1996. He lined up with Dan Wilkinson as a freshman.
He was caught by a torn pectoral muscle in 1997, yet despite this, he began the 1997 Rose Bowl. His squad won both games against Arizona State. After graduating from Ohio State in 1997, Fickell signed with the New Orleans Saints and was picked as an undrafted free agent in the NFL.
He had to spend the rest of his tenure on the injury reserve list after ripping the ACL in his knees. The team later released him.
Coaching Profession
After a brief stint in the NFL and as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 1999, he was named defensive coach at the University of Akron in 2000.
Luke stayed with the Zips for at least two seasons before returning to Ohio State in 2002. Under second-year head coach Jim Tressel, he was named special team coordinator.
