Muller was named as the head coach of the Nashville Predators’ AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, on June 27, 2011. He took over as coach of the Carolina Hurricanes on November 28, 2011, succeeding Paul Maurice.

1998

Muller struggled in Florida, scoring only four goals during the 1998-99 NHL season. His last break came in the middle of the 1999-2000 season, when he signed with the Dallas Stars.

Despite the fact that his scoring touch had almost entirely faded, he was a strong role player for the Stars for four seasons and was part of the “grumpy old men” line that included Mike Keane and John MacLean. He announced his retirement at the end of the 2002-03 season.

Muller rapidly became a fan favourite in Montreal, and he was instrumental in the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 1993. In 1984, the Platers and the Canadian Olympic Team clashed over Muller’s participation in the 1984 Winter Olympics. The Platers’ owner was furious at losing Muller for so long, but they eventually reached an arrangement, and Muller competed in the Olympics. The New Jersey Devils selected him second overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, behind Mario Lemieux.

With his energy and superb two-way play, “Captain Kirk” was the heart and soul of the Devils club. However, New Jersey was never a major Stanley Cup contender while Muller was there, and he was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens on September 20, 1991, along with Roland Melanson, for Stéphane Richer and Tom Chorske.
