On February 7, 2003, Kapanen and Ryan Bast were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Pavel Brendl and Bruno St. Jacques. Kapanen appeared in 31 playoff games for Philadelphia in his first two seasons, scoring 17 points.
Kapanen has also been the majority owner of the Finnish hockey team KalPa Kuopio since 2003, the same club that gave him his professional debut. Kimmo Timonen, who played with Kapanen on the Flyers in 2007, is one of the minority owners.
