Wendy Patrickus was only 25 years old when she took on her first case. She was a defense attorney for the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
Gerald Boyle, her boss at the time, was Dahmer’s attorney. She dispatched Patrickus to talk with the murderer in order to discover more about the 17 killings he committed over the course of 13 years.

Early years
Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 21, 1960. He was the first son of his parents’ two children. Joyce Annette (née Flint; February 7, 1936-November 27, 2000) was his mother, and she taught people how to use teletype machines. Lionel Herbert Dahmer (born July 29, 1936) attended Marquette University and then worked as a research chemist. Joyce Dahmer’s ancestors were from Norway and Ireland, while Lionel Dahmer’s were from Germany and Wales.
According to certain stories, Dahmer was neglected as a child. Other reports, on the other hand, claim that Dahmer was spoiled as a newborn and toddler by both of his parents, despite the fact that his mother was known to be tense, desperate for attention and pity, and combative with her husband and their neighbors.
Lionel spent the majority of his time at university when Dahmer began first grade. Dahmer began collecting large bugs such as dragonflies and moths, as well as the bones of tiny animals such as chipmunks and squirrels, from a little hut near the house. Some of these bones were kept in formaldehyde jars within the hut.
Dahmer asked Lionel two years later, over chicken for dinner, what would happen if he put chicken bones in bleach. Lionel was pleased that his kid appeared to be interested in science, so he demonstrated how to securely bleach and store animal bones. These techniques were utilized by Dahmer to preserve the bones he was gathering.
He also began gathering dead animals, especially roadkill, which he dissected and buried near the home. He would sometimes place the skulls on top of improvised crosses. Dahmer told one of his acquaintances that he was fascinated in how animals “fit together.” In 1975, Dahmer fastened a dead dog’s body to a tree and hung the dog’s head on a stick in the woods behind his house. Later, he invited a buddy to attend the exhibit and explained that he discovered the bones by mistake as a “prank.”
The same year Joyce began taking more Equanil, laxatives, and sleeping drugs on a daily basis, Lionel taught his son how to preserve animal bones.

The teen years and high school
Dahmer was seen as odd since he was a freshman at Revere High School.
He began drinking beer and hard liquor during the day by the age of 14. And, he would frequently conceal his drinks under his school jacket. He explained to a classmate who asked why he was drinking Scotch in a morning history lesson that it was “my medicine.” Even though he didn’t say much, staff believed Dahmer was nice, highly smart, and earned average grades in his freshman year. He enjoyed tennis and briefly played in the high school band.
Dahmer discovered he was gay when he was 13, but he didn’t inform his parents. He had a brief relationship with another adolescent guy at the outset of his adolescence, but they never met. Dahmer later admitted that when he was in his early to mid-teens, he fantasized about dominating and managing a wholly submissive male partner. His masturbation fantasies evolved with time, and he began to focus on the chests and torsos of the males in his fantasies. These fantasies become entwined with dissection over time. Dahmer had a fantasy when he was about 16 years old of knocking out a certain male jogger he considered attractive and then using his body sexually. He once lurked in the bushes with a baseball bat to await this man, but he never showed up. Dahmer later admitted that this was his first effort to attack someone and force them to obey him.
Dahmer was the class clown at RHS. He was known for his pranks, which became known as “Doing a Dahmer.” At school and in stores, for example, he would bleat and act as if he was having an epileptic episode or had cerebral palsy.

When the instructor threatened to inform the principal, Dahmer explained that he had “a lot of problems” at home and that the school’s guidance counselor was aware of them. Joyce and David left the family home in the spring of that year and relocated to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to live with relatives. Dahmer was only 18 years old and still lived at home with his family. Dahmer’s parents divorced on July 24, 1978. Joyce was allowed to keep her younger son and would receive alimony payments.
