At M-1 Challenge 41 on August 21, 2013, Makhachev fought against Rander Junio, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who had never lost a match. He won because everyone agreed with him.
Makhachev fought Yuri Ivlev at M-1 Challenge 49 on June 7, 2014. Islam won the fight. He hit Ivlev with punches to weaken him, then used an armbar to force Ivlev to give up.
Makhachev beat Ivica Truscek in the third round of their match on September 7, 2014, which was his last fight for M-1 Global before he signed with the UFC.
Final Fight Championship
Makhachev signed a four-fight deal with the UFC on October 2, 2014. He beat Leo Kuntz in the second round at UFC 187 on May 23, 2015.
Makhachev fought Adriano Martins at UFC 192 on October 3, 2015. He was knocked out in the first round, which was his first loss as a professional.
Makhachev was supposed to fight Drew Dober at UFC on Fox 19 on April 16, 2016. After the weigh-ins, the UFC said that Makhachev had tested positive for the banned anti-ischemic drug meldonium in an out-of-competition drug test. The game was called off. After a hearing on July 2, 2016, Makhachev was no longer banned by USADA.

Makhachev fought Nik Lentz at UFC 208 on February 11, 2017. Everyone agreed that he won the fight (30–27, 30–25, 30–25). Makhachev was supposed to fight Michel Prazeres at UFC Fight Night 115 on September 2, 2017. But at the beginning of August, Makhachev dropped out of the fight because of his religion. Mads Burnell took his place.
Makhachev and Gleison Tibau fought at UFC 220 on January 20, 2018.
He won the fight in the first round by knocking out his opponent in 57 seconds.
Makhachev fought Kajan Johnson at UFC on Fox 30 on July 28, 2018. Makhachev took Johnson down in the first round and worked to get into the mount. He then put Johnson in an armbar and got him to tap, giving Makhachev a victory by submission.
Makhachev was going to fight Francisco Trinaldo at UFC 233 on January 26, 2019. On November 11, 2018, however, it was reported that Makhachev had to drop out of the event for some reason that was not made clear. He was replaced by Alexander Hernandez.
Makhachev fought Arman Tsarukyan at UFC on ESPN+ 7 on April 20, 2019. Everyone agreed that he won the fight. He got the Fight of the Night award for this win.
Makhachev fought Davi Ramos at UFC 242 on September 7, 2019. Everyone agreed that he won the fight.
Makhachev was set to fight Alexander Hernandez at UFC 249 on April 18, 2020. Makhachev was on the card, but he couldn’t travel because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he was taken off and replaced by Omar Morales.
Makhachev was set to fight Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 254 on October 24, 2020.
On October 8, 2020, however, it was reported that dos Anjos had tested positive for COVID-19, so he was taken out of the fight. The matchup was kept the same and moved to UFC Fight Night: Felder vs. dos Anjos on November 14, 2020. But on November 8, it was said that Makhachev couldn’t go because he had a staph infection.
Makhachev fought Drew Dober at UFC 259 on March 6, 2021.
In the third round, he used an arm-triangle choke to win the fight.
Makhachev faced Thiago Moisés on July 17, 2021 at UFC on ESPN 26. In the fourth round, he put the other guy to sleep with a rear-naked choke.
A fight with Rafael dos Anjos, who used to be the UFC Lightweight Champion, was rescheduled for UFC 267 on October 30, 2021. However, dos Anjos was forced to pulled from the event due to injury, and he was replaced by Dan Hooker. He won the fight in the first round with a kimura.
Makhachev was supposed to fight Beneil Dariush at UFC Fight Night 202 on February 26, 2022. But on February 12, 2022, it was reported that Dariush had to drop out of the event because he hurt his ankle. Bobby Green took his place. He won the fight with a TKO from ground and pound in the first round.
At UFC 280 on October 22, 2022, Makhachev fought Charles Oliveira for the UFC Lightweight Championship, which was open. Makhachev won the fight and the title in the second round by putting Oliveira to the ground with a punch and then choking him out with his arms. He got the Performance of the Night bonus because of this win.
