Helen Mirren was born Ilynea Lydia Mironoff on July 26, 1945, in London, England. She is a British actress best known for her role as Detective Jane Tennison on the TV series Prime Suspect (1991–96, 2003, and 2006) and for her subtle and sympathetic portrayal of Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006), for which she won an Academy Award.

Mirren was born in London to a father who was from Russia and a mother who was from Scotland. (The family name was Mironoff until Helen was 10 years old, when her father decided to change it to sound more English.) At age 18, she joined the National Youth Theatre in Britain, and a year later, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.

She worked with him for a long time over the next 15 years, playing parts like Cressida in Troilus and Cressida and Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra.

Mirren was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company because of her work with the National Youth Theater (RSC). While with the RSC, she played Castiza in Trevor Nunn’s 1966 production of The Revenger’s Tragedy, Diana in All’s Well That Ends Well (1967), Cressida in Troilus and Cressida (1968), Rosalind in As You Like It (1968), Julia in The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1970), Tatiana in Gorky’s Enemies at the Aldwych (1971), and Miss Julie at The Other Place (19 (1971).

Between 1965 and 1967, she was also in four shows at the University Theatre in Manchester that were put on by the Century Theatre and directed by Braham Murray.
