Griffin went up against Bill Mahood at UFC 53 after winning “The Ultimate Fighter,” and he beat him via submission. At UFC 55, he defeated Elvis Sinosic via TKO. Griffin suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Tito Ortiz at UFC 59. Griffin fought Stephan Bonnar again at UFC 62, this time winning by unanimous decision.
He didn’t fare as well at UFC 66, losing by TKO to Keith Jardine. Griffin came back the following year to defeat Hector Ramirez at UFC 72. He defeated Mauricio Rua in his next fight at UFC 76.
Griffin defeated defending UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson by unanimous decision at UFC 86 in July 2008, becoming the new Light Heavyweight Champion.
At UFC 92, he made his first title defence against the undefeated Rashad Evans. Evans eventually won by TKO, with Griffin suffering a broken hand during the fight. Griffin fought Anderson Silva at UFC 101 after his recovery, but lost by TKO.
Both men, however, received Fight of the Night bonuses for the match. Griffin then defeated Tito Ortiz by split decision at UFC 106. He defeated Rich Franklin by unanimous decision at UFC 126. Two rematches followed this fight.
Griffin was defeated by Mauricio Rua via TKO in the first round. Griffin then defeated Tito Ortiz for the third time by unanimous decision.
