It was the only time the young player played with the full team all season, and it happened just a few days before Radniki’s famous UEFA Cup semifinal match against Hamburger SV, which was the Ni club’s biggest win.

During the next four seasons, Stojkovi played 70 games for Radniki and scored 8 goals.

But the deal soon fell through because Stojkovi was said to be unsure about his chances of playing in Turin because of UEFA’s three-foreigners-per-matchday rule and the fact that Dino Zoff’s bianconeri already had three foreigners on their team: Russians Sergei Aleinikov and Oleksandr Zavarov and Portuguese Rui Barros.

At the end of November 1989, Bernard Tapie, the owner of Olympique de Marseille, flew to Belgrade and made a deal with the Red Star management about a transfer fee and with the player about his salary. The deal was to be signed officially at the end of the season, during the summer transfer window of 1990.

Adriano Galliani from AC Milan called Stojkovi right after he signed a pre-contract with Marseille. However, Galliani was unable to convince Tapie to give up on Stojkovi. One of his most well-known goals came from a corner kick in a match against Partizan Belgrade.
