Background
Reyes was born on December 26, 1989, in Hesperia, California, and is of Mexican American origin. And, Reyes was an athlete from an early age, wrestling and playing American football with aspirations of playing in the NFL. Reyes grew up in a low-income family, and his parents urged him to participate in athletics to avoid becoming connected with gangs. He relocated to New York after graduating from Hesperia High School to attend Stony Brook University, where he got a B.S. in Information Systems.
From 2009 through 2012, Reyes was the starting safety for the Stony Brook Seawolves, eventually becoming captain. He was awarded to the All-Conference team twice, including First Team All-Big South in 2012. With 54 seconds remaining in the first round of the 2011 FCS Playoffs, he intercepted a ball in the end zone to give Stony Brook a 31-28 victory over in-state foe Albany. Reyes finished from Stony Brook as the all-time leader in solo tackles (158), with a total of 259 tackles. While he drew interest from NFL teams, his speed was judged “average,” and he went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Although Reyes attended tryouts for the Canadian Football League following that, he had no desire to play in a lower-level league. Reyes returned to California to work in construction after being depressed at the seeming loss of his NFL dreams. He went on to do manual labour for his father’s cabinetry company. He began training for MMA at Combat Cage Academy, his brother Alexander’s club, to keep in shape and relieve stress. Soon after, Reyes began competing in amateur MMA battles.
Reyes accepted a position as an IT Technical Support Specialist at Oak Hills High School in Oak Hills, California, in 2017. He left the job after two years to devote his whole attention to UFC. Hallie Grossman of ESPN described his life at the time as “By day, he was the technology nerd who ensured the campus internet ran smoothly and installed new computers in classrooms, a la Clark Kent. By night, he was the fighter attempting to carve a niche for himself in MMA, competing in King of the Cage, Legacy Fighting Alliance, and, eventually, the UFC.”
