Michael Smith: Childhood And Education
Smith attended Saint Cuthbert’s High School in St Helens as a high school student. After falling off his bike on the way to school, he broke his hip and had to use crutches for 16 weeks.
During this time, Smith threw his first 180 while on crutches. His first post-secondary school choice was a joinery degree at a local community college, but he dropped out with one exam left to compete in a darts competition, a move he describes as the best of his life.
He won numerous local darts tournaments before making his professional darts debut at the 2009 UK Open, where he was ousted in the first round by Dave Ladley 6-5.

Bully Boy defeated three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen by a score of seven sets to four on Tuesday night, capturing his maiden PDC World Championship.
It was a watershed moment for Smith, who had previously lost all of his darts finals until November of last year.
And as he ran to his family to begin his celebrations after winning his second major darts title, his family was at the forefront of his mind.
Smith’s wife and two children were not permitted to witness his semi-final match against Gabriel Clemens, as Smith revealed to Sky Sports on Monday.
Smith’s family cheered him on for every dart he threw, with his two daughters wearing Bully Boy jerseys and front-row seats.
As he threw the final dart to win the tournament, he took a brief moment to shake Van Gerwen’s hand before sprinting to his family to celebrate.
It was evident how much it meant to the entire family that Smith had won the title, with everyone thrilled that he had finally crossed the finish line.

- Smith defeated Peter Manley and Matt Clark to reach the round of 32 of the UK Open before losing to Mervyn King. He was one of several teenage athletes who had a significant impact on the tournament, including William O’Connor, Arron Monk, and Reece Robinson.
