Amateur
After finishing his high school career at Walled Lake Northern High School in Commerce Township, Michigan, Connor Hellebuyck played one season of junior hockey for the Odessa Jackalopes. The Odessa Jackalopes were a franchise that had been a minor league affiliate of the New York Islanders, but they had recently moved to junior hockey as part of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). While playing for Odessa, Hellebuyck rose from being a virtually unknown player to a top prospect. As a result, the Winnipeg Jets selected him in the next year’s draught after his season with Odessa.
Hellebuyck was awarded a scholarship to play for the UMass Lowell River Hawks in the NCAA Men’s Division I Hockey East Conference. Over the course of two seasons, he appeared in a total of 54 games for the River Hawks, compiling a record of 38–12–2 with a save percentage of.946, a goals against average of 1.60, and 12 shutouts. During his first season of play, he captured the Hockey East Championship and qualified for the Frozen Four tournament. The United States national ice hockey team has selected Hellebuyck to compete in the 2015 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships. Hellebuyck would be the reason why the United States of America finished in third place in the tournament. During the course of the competition, Hellebuyck played eight games and finished with a record of 7–1–0 with two shutouts. Additionally, he would complete his career with a goals-against average of 1.37 and a save percentage of.948. The United States record for most wins in a single tournament was set in 1939, and his seven victories tied that record. Hellebuyck was included on the preliminary roster of the North American national hockey team that will compete in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
