Chellsie Memmel Made A Comeback To Gymnastics

Chellsie Memmel, an Olympic silver medalist and mother of two children, made an inspirational comeback to gymnastics almost nine years after retiring. At the US Classic, the 32-year-old raced against athletes half her age, proving that age is just a number. Memmel won the global all-around title in 2015 and has numerous other accomplishments to her name.

Returning to the arena meant everything to her. “It’s here, it’s happening….training day has come to an end. It was strange but fantastic to walk back into the arena as a gymnast.

Everyone was so friendly and encouraging, and I couldn’t have wished for a nicer first time back on the floor “On the eve of her comeback, Memmel wrote after her final session.

Memmel made a strong comeback, scoring 13.750 for a full-twisting Yurchenko on her vault. She stumbled slightly on the balance beam but recovered nicely to achieve 11.800.

Many people who saw her as a teenager remembered her elegant movements. Memmel is proud of her comeback and says it was a statement to those who urged gymnasts to retire in their early twenties. “You’re having fun, you’re seeing how far you can carry this when people said you should have retired when you were 20 or 24 or you couldn’t have kids and come back to a sport,” Memmel said.

Chellsie Memmel: Career Details

Early Career

Andy and Jeanelle Memmel raised Chellsie Marie Memmel in West Allis, Wisconsin. Her parents were both gymnastics trainers, and they encouraged her to play in the gym and taught her the fundamentals. She began training at Salto Gymnastics with Jim Chudy when she was eight years old.

In the year 2000, she began competing at the junior elite level.

2003

Chellsie advanced to the senior international elite gymnast level in 2003. She finished third in the National Podium Meet and the American Classic, and was invited to the Pacific Challenge, a tri-meet with Canada and Australia. She won the all-around competition at that competition.

Chellsie was recovering from a hamstring injury that had hampered her training time prior to the 2003 U.S. National Championships.

At the Pan American Games, she won four medals, including gold in the all-around and uneven bars.

Chellsie led the American team in the preliminary round at Worlds, qualifying in second place and first among her colleagues for the all-around final. She was the only American to compete on every event in the team finals, and she received the highest all-around score.

In the event finals, she tied for the world title on the uneven bars with colleague Hollie Vise.

2004

Chellsie finished third at the American Cup in 2004, trailing US teammates Carly Patterson and Courtney McCool.

She shattered a metatarsal bone in her foot while training a piked Barani on balancing beam during a national team training camp in April, and she was unable to compete at the National Championships or the Olympic Trials.

She petitioned for a spot on the Olympic team selection camp, but was unable to perform to her full potential. She was chosen an alternate for the United States Olympic team in 2004.

Chellsie won the uneven bars title in the 2004 World Cup Final later that year.

2005

Chellsie started the 2005 season at the American Cup, which lacked an all-around competition that year. She won the uneven bars and finished third on the balance beam.

She finished fourth in the all-around at the US Classic and silver in the all-around at the National Championships, trailing only Nastia Liukin.

She was chosen to represent the United States at the Pan American Games, where she won the all-around title as well as individual gold medals on beam and bars.

Chellsie opted to turn professional after her triumph at the 2005 Worlds, foregoing her NCAA eligibility.

2006

Chellsie began 2006 with a tie in the all-around at the Pacific Alliance Championships. She hurt her shoulder while practicing an overshoot at the tournament and opted not to compete in the United States Classic.

Chellsie qualified first for the all-around finals at the World Championships, as well as the uneven bars and floor event finals.

In the team final, she landed a front tuck with one foot totally off the beam after falling on her Hindorff release technique on bars, worsening her shoulder injury. Because of her injury, she was forced to withdraw from the all-around and event finals.

2007

Chellsie was still healing from a shoulder injury when the National Championships were held in August 2007. She only competed in floor exercise on the first day of competition and did not compete in the 2007 World Championships.

She made her all-around comeback in the Good Luck Beijing International Invitational, a pre-Olympics test meet in which gymnasts competed in the same arena and on the same equipment as the Olympics.

Chellsie competed in the Toyota Cup in Toyota, Japan, following the Beijing test event, where she won the gold medal on floor exercise and the silver medal on balancing beam.

2008

Chellsie finished third in the all-around at the National Championships in June 2008, trailing Liukin and Shawn Johnson. She performed a fresh, improved floor routine that featured the Dos Santos talent she had previously performed.

Chellsie developed a slight ankle injury while training in Beijing and would compete exclusively on the uneven bars, USA Gymnastics stated on August 3, 2008.

2011

Chellsie returned to competition on July 23, 2011, at the U.S. Classic in Chicago, where she earned the silver medal in the all-around with a total score of 56.95. She finished fourth on the floor (13.65), fifth on the balance beam (14.7), and tied for fifth on the vault with Bridgette Caquatto (14.2).

Chellsie won the silver medal on balancing beam at the National Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in August, with a two-night score of 30. She finished the first night of competition in third place overall (57.35), with a first-place result on beam (15.25).

She attended two Worlds selection camps at the Karolyi Ranch, but she was named to the Pan American Games team rather than the World Championships team, as she had been in 2003.

2012

Chellsie had a second shoulder surgery in February and returned to training shortly after to try to reach the 2012 Olympic team. She participated just on balancing beam at the US Classic, where she fell twice and received an 11.95. Her plea to compete in the National Championships was denied by the selection committee.

Chellsie announced her retirement from gymnastics on November 14, 2012.
