Brian Orser: A Figure Skating Legend’s Journey Through the Pandemic
Navigating New Territories in the World of Figure Skating
Brian Orser, a legendary figure in the skating world with over four decades of experience, has made his mark both as a skater and a coach.
Having attended numerous World Championships and Olympic Games as a skater and now thriving as one of the most successful coaches in the sport, his journey took an unexpected turn during the recent challenging years.3
Adapting to Unprecedented Times
I had the privilege of meeting Brian in Courchevel, France, where he accompanied his student, Corey Circelli, during the first ISU Junior Grand Prix of the 2021/22 season.
Our conversation shed light on the adjustments he and his team had to make during the pandemic, his evolution as a coach, and even his personal favorite programs for the season.
A Return to the Ice
Brian expressed his relief at being back on the road for the 2021/22 season, stating, “It feels really nice. I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope everyone stays diligent and gets vaccinated as I think this is really the answer, globally.”
Challenges in the Great White North
The Covid-19 restrictions in Canada were among the strictest worldwide, making it challenging for Brian’s international skaters to return to Toronto, where he and his team teach at the famous Toronto Cricket and Curling Club.
He shared, “I had a good year and a half with the skaters I taught in Canada. It was a big challenge to keep them motivated, as so many competitions were canceled or held virtually. Also, a lot of teaching was virtual, with many Zoom lessons, sometimes spanning a 12- to 15-hour time difference.”
The Trials of Virtual Coaching
Brian and his team conducted numerous virtual lessons, including sessions with Chinese skater Boyang Jin, who eventually found that he needed in-person coaching.
Despite their best efforts, the situation made it impossible for Jin to come to Toronto. Similarly, Russian star Evgenia Medvedeva returned to her former coaching team in September 2020 after training with Brian for over two years.
Brian reflected, “We had no idea at the beginning that the situation would be going on for so long. Soon after Evgenia left in April 2020, we were able to skate again in Canada. I think if she had just stuck it out, it would have been a totally different season for her.”
Diverging Paths
Other students, such as Katya (Ekaterina Kurakova), chose to move on due to the inability to return to Canada. Brian praised her talent and expressed his best wishes for her new journey with Italian coach Lorenzo Magri in Egna, Italy.
Sadly, Medvedeva’s competitive career came to an end due to a chronic back injury.
Remote Coaching Success
Despite the challenges, some international students continued to work with Brian and his team through remote coaching. Brian said, “I worked remotely with Junhwan Cha.
He sent me videos, and I offered my help and did what I could remotely.” He also revealed that Junhwan had developed personal favorite programs, commending his growth and skill as a skater.
Shining on the Junior Grand Prix

Brian attended the Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel with Canadian junior skater Corey Circelli. Corey’s unique journey from singles to ice dance and back to singles intrigued the skating community.
Brian said, “He is now totally committed to singles,” and added, “It’s a really unusual path, isn’t it?” Corey’s experience in ice dance has notably enhanced his components, musicality, and tempo, contributing to his impressive performances.
Adapting to Competition Amid the Pandemic
Brian acknowledged that Corey was understandably nervous about competing in front of an audience and a technical panel after the pandemic-induced hiatus.
Yet, he and some of Brian’s other Canadian students benefited from the situation, as their international training partners remained in their home countries.
“A bit of the silver linings of the pandemic was that I was able to work very intensely with the skaters that were actually there,” Brian stated.
Evolving as a Coach
Brian believes the pandemic played a role in his development as a coach, noting that he became more technical and explored off-ice jumping classes through virtual platforms.
He expressed, “Now it became a training tool, rather out of necessity when the rinks were closed. But the kids came back stronger because they had been doing this.”
Finding Balance and New Passions
Amid his extensive travels with his skaters over the years, Brian also found time for personal reflection and relaxation during the pandemic. He delved into various hobbies, such as cooking, learning to make sourdough bread, and spending quality time at his summer home by the lake in Port Carling at the Muskoka Lakes, Ontario.
He also embraced entertainment through shows like ‘The Crown,’ ‘Big Little Lies,’ and documentaries.
A Rekindled Connection
The pandemic provided Brian with more precious time with his husband of 12 years, Rajesh Tiwari. Brian spoke fondly of this experience, “We’ve had so much time together, which was very nice.”
The break from his usual busy schedule allowed them to reconnect and savor moments away from the world of figure skating.
An Olympic Journey Awaits
As Brian, his coaching team, and his skaters prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, he hopes that the event proceeds as planned. Drawing inspiration from the successful handling of the Tokyo 2021 Summer Games, Brian remains optimistic about the future
