Halliday was signed on a season-long loan by Gabala FK on June 28, 2017. He made his UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round debut for Gabala against Jagiellonia Biaystok. On January 4, 2018, Gabala announced the termination of Halliday’s loan.

Caixinha was fired in October 2017 and replaced by Graeme Murty, who welcomed Halliday’s return to Scotland. He was named to the starting lineup in the 2017-18 Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic, but was substituted for Josh Windass before halftime with Rangers already two goals down; television cameras caught Halliday yelling to the crowd in frustration.

Two weeks later, at Celtic Park, against the same opponents, Halliday played the entire game at left back but was exposed several times due to his unfamiliarity with the position as Celtic won 5-0 to clinch the Scottish title. This was Murty’s final game in charge, and the Rangers finished the season in third place.

In the absence of regular penalty taker Martyn Waghorn, Halliday converted from the spot in the 2016 Scottish Challenge Cup Final 4-0 win over Peterhead; he also scored his penalty in the Scottish Cup semi-final shoot-out against Celtic. He scored a “stunning” long-range goal to put Rangers ahead 2-1 against Hibernian in the final, but they went on to lose 3-2.

On 10 September 2016, he came on as a half-time substitute for Niko Kranjar in the Old Firm match against Celtic at Celtic Park, which resulted in a 5-1 defeat. A few days after the game, Halliday was involved in a training ground brawl with fellow Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, which resulted in Barton being suspended for three weeks by Rangers.

With club captain Lee Wallace unavailable for the next League Cup match against Queen of the South, Warburton named Halliday captain. He played the entire game, scoring the second goal in a 5-0 victory, while Barton’s contract was terminated a few months later. Under new manager Pedro Caixinha, Halliday’s appearances became less frequent, and Rangers finished third behind Aberdeen and Celtic.
