Recent incidents and tweets, on the other hand, have frequently elicited condemnation on social media and from peers.
ESPN had to strike a settlement with Jason Pierre-Paul in 2015 when Schefter publicly released his confidential medical information following the July 4 fireworks accident.
While the NFL investigation into the Washington Commanders had the most impact on Jon Gruden, Schefter was also involved. In July 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported that Schefter had previously delivered an unpublished draft of a planned NFL lockout piece to then-Washington president Bruce Allen.
Schefter was also chastised for tweets criticizing Dalvin Cook and Deshaun Watson during the 2021 NFL season and the 2022 offseason. When a grand jury declined to indict Watson on criminal charges alleging sexual misbehavior, Schefter’s tone implied that Watson’s version of events was correct. Two hours later, he apologized via Twitter.
Schefter tweeted in November 2021 that Dalvin Cook was the victim of domestic abuse and extortion, citing Cook’s agency as the source. Cook was named in a lawsuit for assault, battery, and false imprisonment less than an hour later, according to the Star Tribune. Later, Schefter apologized on ESPN for failing to contact Cook’s alleged victim.
Most recently, Schefter faced a barrage of criticism for breaking the terrible death of Dwayne Haskins. ESPN’s top NFL insider framed the announcement in a since-deleted Tweet in a way that highlighted Haskins’ struggles as a quarterback.
