Early Life and Training
Growing up, Owens played several sports, including baseball, soccer, and ice hockey, but it wasn’t until he watched the Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels match from WrestleMania XI with his father that he became interested in professional wrestling.
At the age of 14, Owens began training with Quebec-based wrestler Serge Jodoin, and the next year, he started working out with Jacques Rougeau. He also trained with Terry Taylor, who he has referred to as his “primary trainer.”
Debut and Early Career
On May 7, 2000, the day before his 16th birthday, Owens made his debut in L’Assomption, Quebec.2
He spent the next four years training with Rougeau and competing for Rougeau’s promotion before wrestling for several other Canadian companies.
In 2003, Owens debuted for the International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS) and had a fierce rivalry with El Generico, with whom he had several memorable matches.
On June 15, 2004, Owens defeated El Generico for the IWS World Heavyweight Title, becoming the first IWS World Heavyweight Champion to defend the title overseas by defeating Roderick Strong for Jersey All Pro Wrestling (JAPW).

Ring of Honor and Independent Circuit
Owens’ impressive performances in IWS caught the attention of Ring of Honor (ROH), where he performed from 2007 until joining WWE in late 2014.
