Candace Parker: Bio
On April 19, 1986, in St. Louis, Missouri, Sara and Larry Parker brought their son Parker into the world. Her two older brothers are Anthony Parker, who used to play basketball in the NBA, and Marcus Parker, who is a doctor.2
Since her family liked basketball, she began playing when she was young. Her father played basketball at the University of Iowa in the 1970s. The Parkers were also huge fans of the Chicago Bulls. Candace didn’t want to play basketball because she thought her skills wouldn’t be as good as her dad’s and brother’s. Instead, she focused on soccer.
Her family didn’t convince her to play basketball until she was in the seventh grade. Her father helped her and gave her advice. Parker said this about the incident: “Because I was so much better at the game and knew it better than everyone else, I often coasted, so he did things to irritate and challenge me.”
If my dad and I went to a park to practice and he thought I wasn’t doing enough, he would get in the car and leave. I’d have to run to get home. I mean, run home. When I figured it out, I started trying to go to parks close by.
Parker grew up near Chicago, and he was a big fan of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. She had a picture of her favorite player ever and hung it up in her room.

Parker was picked first in the 2008 WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks, which happened on April 9, 2008, a day after she won the NCAA championship. In her first game, against the Phoenix Mercury on May 17, 2008, she scored 34 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and gave out 8 assists. Cynthia Cooper’s 25 points in her first game in 1997 was the previous record for a rookie’s first game. Her 34 points broke that record. It is a record that hasn’t been broken since.
She dunked during a regular WNBA game for the first time on June 22, 2008, against the Indiana Fever. She was the second woman in WNBA history to do so, after her teammate Lisa Leslie. Lisa Leslie’s dunk was on the same basket as this one. During a regular game against the Seattle Storm on June 24, 2008, she became the first player in WNBA history to dunk twice.
For the months of May and July 2008, Parker was named the Hanns-G “Go Beyond” Rookie of the Month. Parker scored 40 points and had 16 rebounds and 6 assists in an 82–74 overtime win over the Houston Comets on July 9, 2008. This was the most points he had ever scored in his career.
