Richard Evonitz: Victim

Richard Marc Evonitz was the oldest of Joseph and Tess Ragin Evonitz’s three children, and he was born in Columbia, South Carolina, in July 1963. He entered the Navy after finishing high school and temporarily working as a manager at Jiffy Lube.

Before being honourably discharged and obtaining two Good Conduct Medals, Richard worked as a sonar technician for eight years. Subsequently, he worked for businesses that produced grinders and compressors.

After divorcing Bonnie Lou Gower, his first wife, in 1996, he went through a terrible financial problem. Ultimately, in 1999, the native of Columbia wed Hope Marie Crowley.

Richard is accused of masturbating and exposing himself in front of a 15-year-old girl in Orange Park, Florida, in 1987.

He was taken into custody a month later and was sentenced to three years of probation after entering a no contest plea to the charge of indecent and lecherous behaviour in the presence of a kid.

Richard also said that he would seek out and target teenage girls when he had frequent, irrational sexual impulses. Surprisingly, this unhealthy behaviour started to become animalistic, and in order to satiate his depravities, he went to kidnapping, sexual assault, and even murder.

Sofia Silva, 16, was kidnapped by Richard on September 9, 1996, in the front yard of her home in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Five weeks later, in a creek in King George, Virginia, her decomposing body was discovered, but the authorities were baffled as to how she died and who the murderer was.

When two sisters were discovered dead in Hanover County in May 1997, they did, however, discover a lead. Richard abducted Kathryn “Kati” Lisk, 12, and Kristin Lisk, 15, from their front lawn on May 1, 1997, after school. Then, after sexually abusing them and killing them by strangulation, he dumped their remains in the South Anna River.

Five days later, Kristin and Kati’s bodies were discovered, and the police reportedly discovered a hair from Sofia on the older Lisk sister’s body.

Police speculated that the Spotsylvania County victim had also been similarly assaulted and slain after sensing a connection between the killings.

However, due to a lack of evidence, both instances were unsolved for a number of years until June 24, 2002, when Richard kidnapped Kara Robinson, then 15 years old, from her friend’s front yard in Columbia under duress.

He led her to his apartment, tied her up, made her smoke marijuana under duress, and then raped her repeatedly for the following 18 hours.

Fortunately, Kara showed incredible bravery despite her trauma and left Richard’s residence the next day.

She informed the Richland County Sheriff’s Office of the incident and led them back to his apartment building, where a maintenance worker assisted them in locating the home. To everyone’s surprise, Richard had already left by that time, apparently upon waking up and discovering Kara gone.

However, the investigators discovered multiple news articles about the unsolved deaths of Silvia, Kristin, and Kati in a sizable locker in the flat. As a result, Richard became the main suspect in the homicide investigation.

Is Richard Evonitz Dead or Alive?

The police also discovered notes concerning the three girls and directions to a site close to their home in addition to the newspaper articles. Also, the DNA samples taken from the residence matched the three victims’ samples.

This provided the authorities with concrete evidence that Richard was responsible for the 1996 and 1997 murders of Silvia, Kristin, and Kati as well as their sexual assault.

The investigators quickly pinpointed the suspect’s whereabouts to Sarasota, Florida while they sought for him. Richard was pursued by a police dog and involved in a high-speed car chase as a result of which he ran over spike strips on the highway.

Before being apprehended, Richard shot himself to death after realising there was no way out. Further investigation by the cops revealed that he had allegedly called several family members after leaving his Columbia flat and revealed his misdeeds in code.

One of Richard’s sisters was among them, to whom he allegedly confessed to the three killings. The authorities decided that he had killed Silvia, Kristin, and Kati and was planning to kill Kara based on the evidence found in his flat.

Richard, however, was afraid of being arrested after she ran away, so he fled and eventually killed himself to avoid capture.
