Is Kathleen Dead? Melanie Lynskey May Have Parted Ways With The Last of Us
In the post-apocalyptic action drama series ‘The Last of Us,’ which airs on HBO, Kathleen Coghlan, who is played by Melanie Lynskey, is an essential supporting character. She resided in the cordyceps fungi quarantine zone in Kansas City, Missouri, and managed to survive the outbreak that occurred in 2003.1
The FEDRA maintained authority there, same as they did in every other QZ. However, opposition was mounted against the totalitarian regime, and Michael, Kathleen’s brother, emerged as the movement’s most prominent leader.
After the death of her brother, Kathleen assumed control of the movement and overthrew FEDRA. She was just as violent toward her opponents as she had been toward FEDRA.
We have an answer for you if the cliffhanger at the end of ‘The Last of Us’ season 1, episode 5 left you wondering whether or not Kathleen has passed away and Lynskey has quit the show.

Kathleen Coghlan: Is She Dead?
- In ‘The Last of Us,’ it is confirmed that Kathleen has passed away. She makes her debut in episode 4, during which she questions a doctor whose name we are later shown to be Edelstein. Kathleen has never lived anywhere else other than Kansas City in her entire life.
- There is evidence that her mother is still alive and residing there. Kathleen realizes that Edelstein brought her into the world as a patient, but it does not prevent her from taking his life once she understands that she does not require his assistance any longer.
- Michael was a guy of honor, integrity, and forgiveness. He was a man of principle. Kathleen was able to meet him in prison before he passed away, and during their time together, he encouraged her to forgive those who she believes have harmed them.
- But Kathleen was able to overthrow FEDRA and then actively searched for the people who had informed on their neighbors before carrying out the executions.
- Henry is the target of her pursuit since she is certain that he is to blame for her brother’s enslavement and subsequent murder. And she is going after Sam for no other reason than the fact that he is associated with his older brother.
- Joel and Ellie drive into the city ten days after the victorious revolution, and their actions ultimately result in the deaths of two people, attracting the notice of Kathleen. Because of this, Joel and Henry decide to make their partnership official.
- Henry had never shown aggressive tendencies until meeting Joel and Ellie, despite the fact that he is familiar with the city and knows how to get out of it. The fifth episode comes to a close with Kathleen and her companions having successfully caught up with Henry, Sam, Joel, and Ellie.
- Henry makes the decision to turn himself in and begins to argue with Kathleen in an effort to persuade her to release Sam and Ellie from the house where Joel is being held captive.
- She does not comply, and just as she is ready to kill him, infected survivors surface from the dirt below them.
- During the time that FEDRA was still in control, they compelled the Infected to live underground. One of the Infected is a bloater, and it is responsible for the death of Perry, who was Kathleen’s second-in-command.
- The remaining members of the rebel group are put to death. When Kathleen aims her rifle towards Henry, Sam, and Ellie, she is attacked by a clicker, which ultimately leads to her death.
Did Melanie Lynskey Leave The Last of Us?
- Lynskey did leave ‘The Last of Us,’ that much is certain. “The Last of Us” can be seen of as a road series in some respects. As Joel and Ellie, the show’s main characters, travel around the post-apocalyptic landscape of America, they meet a variety of people in each episode.
- Unfortunately, the vast majority of these people do not survive until the conclusion of the episode. The events surrounding Sam, Henry, Kathleen, and Perry all play out in the same manner.
- It has an effect on the primary characters and the story as a whole, particularly because the deaths of these minor people are brought about by it.
- Although Kathleen is a character created just for the show, a rebel group quite similar to the one she heads does appear in the Naughty Dog game.
- They are known as hunters, and Ellie and Joel meet them in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, alongside Sam and Henry, and not in Kansas City as one might expect. Lynskey claims that the co-creator of the series, Craig Mazin, told her that her character was a war criminal and that Michael was a figure comparable to Jesus.
- She was hesitant to accept the part at first, but Mazin was eventually successful in persuading her to do so. Lynskey explained his explanation in an interview with EW, saying, “He informed me that her brother was basically Jesus.” “Like, think growing up as the sibling of Jesus and being like, ‘My brother’s the greatest human being,'” he said. “Like, imagine growing up as the sibling of Jesus. He is at the head of the pack.
- He is the most charitable and honorable of people. I don’t consider myself to be all that wonderful of a person. Because I have this person by my side, I don’t really need to be anything in particular.'”
- The actress from ‘Yellowjackets’ went on to say, “And then somebody viciously kills him, and it’s so unfair. Who are you trying to get with that? You were never given the opportunity to participate in the role, and now that you are, you are not confident in your ability to do the job.
- When she did step into the position, she didn’t have a lot of guilt about doing evil things, in contrast to her brother, who did. This is something that I considered to be a really interesting aspect of her character.
- She came to the realization that she was rather heartless, and as a result, she was able to be extremely effective in a manner that he perhaps wasn’t because she didn’t care about other people in the same way that he did. That’s a really fascinating aspect of the dynamic.
