After playing college baseball at Dixie State College in Utah, Thompson was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 16th round of the amateur draft in 2002. He now holds the record for the most scoreless innings in a single season in AA.
On May 8, 2005, he made his first appearance in the major leagues. During his first season, he tossed 55 innings, had 40 appearances, and had a 2.95 earned run average.
