LaDainian Tomlinson was born in Rosebud, Texas in 1979 to Loreane and Oliver, the latter of whom abandoned the family when Tomlinson was seven years old. He joined the Pop Warner Little Scholars football programme at the age of nine, where he scored his first touchdown.

Tomlinson attended University High School in Waco, Texas, where he participated in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He had 2,554 yards and 39 touchdowns as an offensive player his senior year.

College Career

Tomlinson received an athletic scholarship to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1997. He led the TCU Horned Frogs to their first bowl victory in 41 years in 1998, defeating the USC Trojans in the Sun Bowl.

The following season, he set an NCAA FBS record with 406 rushing yards in a single game. Tomlinson finished the season with an NCAA-best 1,850 yards rushing.

Tomlinson led the NCAA with 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns in his senior season, earning him unanimous first-team All-American honours. He also won the Doak Walker Award as the best running back in the country and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2000.

Tomlinson finished his collegiate career with 5,263 rushing yards, which ranked sixth in NCAA Division I history. He received a communications degree from TCU.

San Diego Chargers

Tomlinson was chosen fifth overall in the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He quickly established himself as the team’s starting running back. Also, he ran for 1,236 yards in his rookie season and became the first NFL player to rush for 1,000 yards and catch 100 passes in the same season in 2003. He was also named to the Pro Bowl team in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Tomlinson won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 2007 after a record-breaking season, receiving 44 of 50 votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. He was also named Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year and received ESPY Awards for Male Athlete of the Year, Best Record-Breaking Performance, and Best NFL Athlete.

The following season, Tomlinson added to his success by becoming the fourth fastest NFL player to reach 10,000 yards rushing. Tomlinson was named to the NFL’s 2000s All-Decade Team after a string of injuries and disappointments in 2008 and 2009. During the decade, he scored 138 rushing touchdowns, the most in any NFL decade. The Chargers released Tomlinson in 2010.

Tomlinson met fellow student LaTorsha Oakley at TCU, and they married in 2003. The couple has two children: a son and a daughter. Tomlinson bought a 4,274-square-foot, three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home near Austin, Texas, in 2007.

It had a covered patio with a view of Lake Travis and a swimming pool and spa. They sold this house for $1.46 million in 2015. Previously, Tomlinson owned a 13-acre estate in Poway, California. He paid $3.5 million for this house in 2004 and spent $1.5 million on improvements. He sold this property in August 2014 for $3.5 million.
