2019

Noesen was released as a free agent on June 25, 2019, after the Devils did not extend him a qualifying offer. He committed to attend the Dallas Stars’ training camp for a professional tryout on September 3. Noesen stayed with the squad during the preseason to play for his home state club before being dismissed by the Stars.

He  signed a one-year contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League (AHL) on October 4, 2019. On December 2, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins after recording 22 points in as many games with the club. On December 4, Noesen scored in a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Blues in his NHL debut. And, on December 19, 2019, he was claimed by the San Jose Sharks after being waived by the Penguins. He made his NHL debut two days later, scoring a goal in a 2-5 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

2017

The Ducks placed Noesen on waivers during his longest NHL stay, the 2016-17 season, after he scored two goals in 12 games. The New Jersey Devils claimed Noesen off waivers from Anaheim on January 25, 2017. The Devils re-signed Noesen to a one-year, two-way contract for $660,000 on July 26, 2017.

2013

Noesen was named to Team USA for the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships but was not permitted to compete. He was under a 10-game OHL suspension for a charging incident at the time, and the IIHF upheld the sentence. Following the conclusion of the 2012-13 NHL lockout, Noesen was invited to the Senators’ training camp in Ottawa. He did not make the Senators’ lineup and was returned to junior on January 16, 2013, to play for the major junior team Plymouth Whalers.

Noesen was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks on July 5, 2013, along with forward Jakob Silfverberg and a first-round pick in the 2014 draught, for forward Bobby Ryan. Noesen scored his first NHL goal on December 7, 2016.

The following season, Noesen set a career best in points with 13 goals and 27 points in 72 games; he was one of several improved players on the squad that helped the Devils enter the playoffs for the first time since their Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2012. Noesen grew up playing hockey in the Dallas suburbs, where he met future Devils teammate Blake Coleman. He finally migrated north at the age of 14 and ended up playing major junior hockey for the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers. He was chosen by the Senators with a first-round draught pick acquired from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Mike Fisher. On December 29, 2011, he signed an entry-level contract with Ottawa.
