Chad Cornes Hails From A Football Family
Chad is the son of former Australian rules footballer and coach Graham Cornes, and the brother of former Australian rules footballer Kane Cornes.
Graham Cornes
He and his father, was a SANFL champion with Glenelg Football Club between 1967 and 1982. Graham primarily played Ruck Rover and center half-forward in the SANFL.
For Glenelg, he scored 339 goals in 317 club games and was named best and fairest three times. He captained Glenelg in 1978 and was a member of the premiership team in 1973, taking a magnificent mark in the final minutes of the game and calmly scoring the goal to restore the lead.
In 1977, he made a stunning mark against Norwood, which is depicted in Jamie Cooper’s artwork The Game That Made Australia, commissioned by the AFL in 2008 to commemorate the sport’s 150th anniversary.
He began his career in Victoria with the VFL’s South Melbourne but later moved to South Australia. Graham made his VFL debut in 1979 at the age of 31 for Ron Barassi’s North Melbourne, playing five games before being released and returning to South Australia.
Most South Australians thought the footballer looked out of place in the VFL after establishing a reputation as a Ruck Rover in the state.
In their inaugural season in the AFL, he was named the Adelaide Football Club’s first senior coach.
The Crows finished ninth at the end of the 1991 season and ninth again at the end of the 1992 season in Graham’s first year in charge. At the end of the 1993 season, he led the Crows to their first finals appearance, finishing third.

Kane Cornes
Kane played in Port Adelaide’s successful preseason squads in 2001 and 2002.
The squad then advanced to the AFL, and he was a member of the team that won the AFL premiership in 2004, Port Adelaide’s first in the competition. Cornes firmly established himself in the midfield in 2004, his fourth season in the competition, averaging 20 disposals per game.
He continued his outstanding form into 2005, becoming an All-Australian, and despite his team Port Adelaide having a poor year, he completed his 100th game for the club in round 7 and won the AFL Dreamteam competition.
In 2007, he was named All-Australian for the second time in a squad dominated by Geelong players. Kane was also the AFL’s leading possession winner, Port Adelaide’s Brownlow Medal winner, and won the John Cahill Medal ahead of brother Chad.
In 2010, he won his third John Cahill Medal and cemented his position as the club’s most consistent player with a new attacking role that expanded on his previous role of simply tagging the opposition’s best players.
Kane’s 36-possession, 2-goal performance against the Western Bulldogs in Round 16 of that year, as well as a 38-possession performance against West Coast late in the year, were highlights.
The footballer started the first two games of the season before taking a break in round three.
Kane then went on to play three more games to bring his career total to 298 before announcing that his 300th and final game with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service would be against Richmond in round 8 of the competition. Kane appeared in 300 games for Port Adelaide, earning two All Australian guernseys, four best and fairest awards, and a premiership.
