Steward started his high school basketball career at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, where he quickly gained recognition as one of the top players in the state.

During the 2020–21 season, Steward averaged 13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. His consistent performances earned him a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team.
