Akim Aliu was born in Okene, Nigeria to Tai and Larissa Aliu. Tai, Aliu’s father, is a Nigerian who studied in Kyiv on a track and field scholarship, where he met Larissa, Aliu’s mother. He has one brother, Edward, with whom he is quite close.
He identifies as Ukrainian Canadian and says he and his family practice Ukrainian culture. Aliu’s parents decided to relocate the family to Canada and reside in the Toronto area when he was seven years old because they were unhappy with the political situation following the fall of the Soviet Union.
Tai’s family initially struggled as he pursued his schooling to become a computer programmer. Aliu had never played hockey before moving to Canada, but he was fluent in Russian and Ukrainian.
He began skating in a house league in Toronto’s Parkdale district after purchasing his first pair of skates at a yard sale. And, he had a natural talent for the game, and after a few years, he was drafted in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League by the Windsor Spitfires (OHL).

Two years after being selected by the OHL, he was selected as the second pick in the second round of the National Hockey League Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. Akim made his professional debut at the age of 19 with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League.
He joined the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2011. Akim became a full-fledged professional after a successful four-year OHL career split between the Sudbury Wolves and the London Knights.

A Blackhawks ice hockey player has signed a three-year contract with the team
On August 25, 2008, Akim Aliu signed his first professional contract, a three-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. He played in two games following the 2007-08 season, five games following the 2008-09 season, and two at the start of the 2009-10 AHL season before becoming a full-time member.
He appeared in 48 games and had 11 goals and six assists before being reassigned to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye late in the season. After the season, his playing rights were transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers.

In this book for youngsters aged eight to twelve, Aliu describes his experiences overcoming the hurdles of adaptation in Canada and Ukraine.
The book details his experiences with discrimination and hazing while chasing his dream of being a professional hockey player. He eventually compelled hockey to face its racism against people of color after finding his voice.
