Many people were taken aback by Nathaniel Hackett’s first game as the Broncos’ new head coach. The Broncos trailed the Seahawks 17-16 with time running out in their Monday Night Football game. They failed to win the match by a single point, and his controversial decision during the game infuriated the fans even more.
Denver quarterback Russel Wilson converted a third-and-14 into a fourth-and-5 with 1:11 remaining by completing a short pass to Javonte Williams for nine yards while still having two timeouts. Denver was now on the Seahawks’ 46-yard line. Hackett decided not to go for the first down with his offense, which included Wilson, the star of their big offseason trade.

Hackett started his NFL career in 2006 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quality coach under Jon Gruden after serving as an assistant coach at UC Davis and Stanford. Before moving to the Buffalo Bills in the same position for the 2008 and 2009 seasons, he worked there for two years. During those years, he collaborated with quarterbacks including Bruce Gradkowski, Chris Simms, Jeff Garcia, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm.
