Scott Pendlebury: Is He Retiring? The End of an Era
Following his horrific accident in 2017, rumors about Pendlebury’s retirement surfaced throughout the media. Pendlebury had a consistent year until he injured his finger in Round 17 against the Gold Coast Suns. He was hoping to play again the following week after a successful surgery on his finger.
His return, however, was delayed for a month, and it was projected that he would not play until Round 22 or 23. but did not return for the rest of the season Fans thought that Scott might never play again. However, he returned the next season.
Will this be his final season?
When asked if this will be his final year as head coach, Pendlebury was candid about his ambitions. In February of this year, the 34-year-old Magpies captain intimated that he might retire at the end of the current season.
The Magpies’ all-time leading scorer will return to the club as manager for the eighth time in his 17th season. Under McRae, he will play across halfback this year as the new Pies manager looks to freshen up the midfield with players like Braydon Maynard and Nick Daicos set to see more time on the ball.
“It could be my last year as a player, I don’t know,” the excellent athlete stated in February, adding, “I’m thinking about having a terrific pre-season, which I’ve done, and getting the boys ready for the season.”
His retirement words are intriguing, given that Pendlebury’s contract was extended by two years in October 2021, keeping him through the end of the 2023 season; yet, his injuries have become more common than ever, and he may consider retiring sooner.
Pendlebury’s 2021 season was cut short after breaking his leg in round 19, and he fractured it again in December; although he has since trained again, the injury blow still haunts him.
Twitter Challenge, Bleaching Scott Pendlebury’s Hair Blonde
Scott Pendlebury went on Twitter in April 2020 and did something unprecedented: he built a Twitter pole on April 10, 2020, during the Covid lockdown. A Collingwood Twitter poll says that if it achieves 50,000 yes votes, the captain will bleach his hair golden.
Although Scott officially promised to do it if he gets ten thousand people to vote yes, the club has raised the bar somewhat, and some prominent figures are supporting the effort. Jordan de Goey, one of several Magpies sporting a brilliant blonde head of hair at the moment, brought up the concept on a Pendles & Co. episode.
Despite the fact that the idea of dying his hair was brought up for pure entertainment purposes, fans on Twitter and Reddit were not pleased. One Reddit user went so far as to say, “I think we’ll have to simultaneously strip him of his captaincy.” Meanwhile, some fans were dying to see him in blonde hair, but the post has surpassed the 50K mark to this day.
