Jared McCain: Influence of Coach Jon Scheyer
Despite a challenging season for the Duke Blue Devils, Jared McCain emerged as a standout player.2
Averaging 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, with shooting percentages of 46.2% from the floor and 41.4% from beyond the arc, McCain attributes much of his success to the guidance of coach Jon Scheyer.
The Role of Jon Scheyer in Jared McCain’s Development
In an interview with The Ringer NBA Show, McCain reflected on his freshman year and the ups and downs he experienced:
“And I kinda knew, going into freshman year, you’re going to have ups and downs. You got to just be ready for it and when it happened. It was still depressing because obviously, you put the work in.
You want to succeed at that level and you feel like you can and then when it doesn’t work out, you’re just like, ‘Damn. what am I doing wrong?’ So it just kind of took a lot of, you know, looking internally, like, what am I doing like I just got to keep working, keep going and coach Scheyer pull me aside.
We talked a lot throughout the season. He was able to give me the confidence to just keep going. I knew it was going to click at one point. I knew the work was going to work.”
McCain’s Performance and Future Prospects
McCain’s impressive stats have caught the attention of major sports analysts. CBS Sports and Bleacher Report predict he will be the 15th overall pick in the NBA Draft, while ESPN projects him as the 16th pick, potentially joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
Standing at 6-foot-3, McCain might be considered undersized for a guard, but his exceptional shooting skills and high basketball IQ make him a valuable asset.
The 76ers, who have shown interest in McCain, could benefit significantly from his abilities, particularly in supporting Tyrese Maxey.
Challenges and Opportunities for the 76ers
The 2023-24 season started promisingly for the 76ers, with strong performances from the Maxey-Joel Embiid duo.
However, the team’s heavy reliance on these two players became a liability as both struggled with injuries later in the season. Integrating a talent like McCain could bolster the team’s depth and provide much-needed support.
McCain’s Attributes and Their Fit with the 76ers
McCain’s ability to score efficiently and his knack for making smart plays on the court are precisely what the 76ers need. His shooting prowess would complement Maxey’s playmaking and Embiid’s dominance in the paint.
Moreover, McCain’s resilience and determination, shaped by his experiences at Duke under Coach Scheyer, make him a strong candidate to thrive in the NBA.
